    This article examines the operation of primordialist cultural stereotypes and their impact, particularly on the self-representations of Khoe-San people. The operation of these stereotypes is demonstrated by means of a study of a series of Khoe-San-related public events that occurred between 1996 and 2006.     Stereotypes about the Khoe-San1 The term Khoe-San is used in this article instead of Khoisan partly because the spelling ‘Khoekhoe’ is more compatible with orthographies adopted for some of the Khoe languages, such as Namibian Khoekhoe. Hyphenating the two terms takes into account the objection San that they should not be subordinated to, or subsumed within Khoekhoe groupings politically as well as in the conjunction of terms.
