  • Cuauhtemoc

María Castañeda De La Paz, María Paz•ARTICLE•Ethnohistory•2026

Cuauhtemoc is one of the heroes of Mexican history due to the valor and obstinacy with which he defended the island of Mexico against the Spanish advances. This article is an homage in his memory as this past year, 2025, we commemorate his death, which took place in 1525. Much has been written about Cuauhtemoc, but the fascination he instills has caused his history to be peppered with myths that have to be reconsidered and banished. As such, it i…

  • Neighborhood-level factors associated with Covid-19 vaccination rates

Open Access•Grace Keegan, Mengqi Zhu et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Though access to needed primary care and community-belonging are correlated with vaccination rates, this association was not significant when controlling for demographic factors. The association between poverty, race and vaccination status remained significant, indicating that socioeconomic and racial disparities across Chicago drive Covid-19 vaccine recommendation adherence regardless of care access. Understanding how poverty, and its intersecti…

During the last couple of years, the Texcoco coat of arms has received much attention, yet there is no agreement on the interpretation of some of its heraldic elements or its date and authorship. In this article the author presents a new iconographic study accompanied by a review of an important part of Texcoco's history to demonstrate that the goal of the artist who painted this coat of arms was to exalt that city's most significant political ev…

The Mapa de Otumba is a colonial map from central Mexico with pictographic elements that represents a part of the señorío (lordship) of Otumba with a number of its subject towns. An analytical problem of working with this document is a lack of an accompanying text, making it difficult to understand why it was made and by whom. However, using certain archival documents, it has been possible to explore the provenance of the map. In this essay, a ne…

I will consider the nature of this participation as well as the historical context in which the requests for the coats of arms were made. My analysis will show an indigenous …
