  • Climate Trends at a Hotspot of Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Causes in Nicaragua, 1973–2014

    Open Access•Zoe E Petropoulos, Oriana Ramirez-Rubio et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

An ongoing epidemic of chronic kidney disease of uncertain etiology (CKDu) afflicts large parts of Central America and is hypothesized to be linked to heat stress at work. Mortality rates from CKDu appear to have increased dramatically since the 1970s. To explore this relationship, we assessed trends in maximum and minimum temperatures during harvest months between 1973 and 2014 as well as in the number of days during the harvest season for which…

  • Urinary Metals Concentrations and Biomarkers of Autoimmunity among Navajo and Nicaraguan Men

Open Access•Madeleine Kangsen Scammell, Caryn Sennett et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Metals are suspected contributors of autoimmune disease among indigenous Americans. However, the association between metals exposure and biomarkers of autoimmunity is under-studied. In Nicaragua, environmental exposure to metals is also largely unexamined with regard to autoimmunity. We analyzed pooled and stratified exposure and outcome data from Navajo ( n = 68) and Nicaraguan ( n = 47) men of similar age and health status in order to character…

  • Urban health

    Open Access•Oriana Ramírez‐rubio, Carolyn Daher et al.•ARTICLE•Globalization and Health•2019

BACKGROUND: Cities are an important driving force to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the New Urban Agenda. The SDGs provide an operational framework to consider urbanization globally, while providing local mechanisms for action and careful attention to closing the gaps in the distribution of health gains. While health and well-being are explicitly addressed in SDG 3, health is also present as a pre condition of SDG 11, that…

  • Tourism and HIV

    Open Access•Nancy Romero‐daza, Nancy Romero-Daza et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropology in Action•2013

This article describes the involvement of women from rural Costa Rica, where tourism is predominant, in the creation of HIV/AIDS awareness materials that are appropriate for families and peers. The project was conducted in four towns in the Monteverde Zone, a region that has experienced a transition from an economy based on agriculture and dairy farming, to one dependent on tourism. Informed by previous research that shows the signi ficant impact…

  • Chronic kidney disease in Nicaragua

    Open Access•Oriana Ramirez-Rubio, Oriana Ramírez‐rubio et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

Interviews provided evidence suggesting that medications such as diuretics, antibiotics and NSAIDs are widely used and sold over the counter for symptoms that may be related to dehydration and volume depletion. These factors, alone or in combination, may be possible contributors to kidney damage. Acute kidney damage coupled with volume depletion and exposures including medications and infectious agents should be further evaluated as causal factor…

  • An epidemic of chronic kidney disease in Central America

    Oriana Ramirez-Rubio, Oriana Ramírez‐rubio et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 11

For almost 2 decades, large areas of Central America have been impacted by an under-recognised epidemic of chronic kidney disease (CKD) of unknown causes whose victims are disproportionately young men of working age.1–5 Although exact figures are unavailable, based on estimates from our group, the death toll has likely reached at least 20 000. El Salvador, for example, has the highest overall mortality from kidney disease in the world (with Nicar…
