The below-poverty-line (BPL) population experiences challenges in accessing quality healthcare services due to their limited affordability and vulnerability to illness. This paper assessed their health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and its associated determinants. Influence of a pilot urban primary healthcare model on the use of medically trained healthcare providers among the low-income slum populations in Bangladesh
The Aalo Clinic Model was effective in influencing healthcare-seeking pattern of the slum populations and enhancing the utilization of qualified care from MTPs. The study supports replicating the model within existing healthcare structures and scaling it nationwide to advance universal health coverage in urban Bangladesh, contingent on sustained government funding for its operations
Assessment of socioeconomic and health vulnerability among urban slum dwellers in Bangladesh
The SEHVI-BD offers a critical tool for policymakers to identify and address vulnerabilities, facilitating more targeted public health interventions in urban Bangladesh and similar low-income settings. This study further emphasizes the importance of integrating comprehensive vulnerability assessments into public health policies to reduce inequalities and improve well-being, especially for the urban marginalized slum population
The effectiveness of a government-sponsored health protection scheme in reducing financial risks for the below-poverty-line population in Bangladesh
The Government of Bangladesh is piloting a non-contributory health protection scheme called Shasthyo Surokhsha Karmasuchi (SSK) to increase access to quality essential healthcare services for the below-poverty-line (BPL) population. This paper assesses the effect of the SSK scheme on out-of-pocket expenditure (OOPE) for healthcare, catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) and economic impoverishment of the enrolled population. A comparative cross-se…

Change in economic burden of diarrhoea in children under-five in Bangladesh
Background: In Bangladesh, diarrhoea in children under-five is a major public health problem with cost implications. Although under-five diarrhoea mortality and morbidity have declined from 2007 to 2018, change in the economic burden is unknown. This study determined the change in the societal economic burden of under-five diarrhoea in Bangladesh comparing 2007 to 2018. Methods: A prevalence-based, retrospective cost analysis was conducted from a…
Knowledge, attitude, and practice of Bangladeshi urban slum dwellers towards Covid-19 transmission-prevention
The first COVID-19 case in Bangladesh was detected on March 8, 2020. Since then, efforts are being made across the country to raise awareness among the population for preventing the spread of this virus. We aimed to examine the urban slum dwellers’ knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) towards COVID-19 transmission-prevention. A phone-based cross-sectional survey was conducted in five slums of Dhaka City. Total 476 adult slum dwellers were inte…
Effect of extreme weather events on injury, disability, and death in Bangladesh
While there is increasing evidence on the trends and impacts of climate change, both globally and in Bangladesh, there is a limited quantitative analysis on the impacts of natural disasters on population health and the association with socio-economic characteristics. Using data from the ‘Bangladesh Disaster-Related Statistics-2015’, we assessed disaster-related health outcomes namely, injury, disability, and death. We applied three logistic regre…

Design: Cross-sectional interviews with local and central-level programme staff and document reviews were conducted. Using an activity-based costing approach, we estimated start-up and implementation costs of the programme. …

Adverse Selection in Community Based Health Insurance among Informal Workers in Bangladesh
Community-based Health Insurance (CBHI) schemes are recommended for providing financial risk protection to low-income informal workers in Bangladesh. We assessed the problem of adverse selection in a pilot CBHI scheme in this context. In total, 1292 (646 insured and 646 uninsured) respondents were surveyed using the Bengali version of the EuroQuol-5 dimensions (EQ-5D) questionnaire for assessing their health status. The EQ-5D scores were estimate…
Epidemiology and risk factors for pneumonia severity and mortality in Bangladeshi children <5 years of age before 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine introduction
Modifiable factors for severe pneumonia and mortality included low weight for age and access to safe drinking water. Improving vaccination status could decrease disease severity
Maintaining village water pumps by women volunteers in Bangladesh
Sixty-three women in the district of Mirzapur, Bangladesh, were trained as voluntary pump caretakers using 21 Tara handpumps. They received 6 hours classroom training and 2 hours of practical training. When evaluated over a 15-month period the pumps maintained by the women volunteers functioned as well as those maintained by trained pump mechanics. These findings are significant as an indication of how rural water supply can be sustained and inte…
Effects of Floods on the Use and Condition of Pit Latrines in Rural Bangladesh
The severe floods of 1987 in Bangladesh had devastating effects on many development activities. Here, the use and condition of improved sanitation facilities (double pit water sealed latrines) during the 1987 peak flood period are presented. Two surveys on the use and condition of the latrines were carried out in May (pre-flood) and September (post-flood) 1987 in a rural area 60 km north of Dhaka, with a population of about 4500. General usage of…
