Scenario-Based Seismic Risk Assessment in the Timiskaming Region of Eastern Canada
Seismic risk assessments are essential for mitigating and preparing for future seismic events and have been conducted globally, including in seismically quiet regions like eastern Canada. Although eastern Canada has relatively low seismic activity, it has experienced damaging earthquakes. Recent studies suggest that these events resulted from fault reactivation, indicating the potential for future earthquakes in the region. This article presents …
An exploratory forward sortation area-level analysis of social vulnerability change and insured disaster losses in Canada
Understanding how social vulnerability evolves over time is essential for assessing broad patterns of societal exposure to hazards. This study develops and compares Social Vulnerability Index (SoVI) scores for Canadian Forward Sortation Areas (FSAs) using the 2016 and 2021 Census data, providing a national-level, spatially explicit exploratory assessment of temporal changes in vulnerability and their spatial correspondence with insured disaster l…
Hail vulnerability modeling for Calgary, Canada using environmental and socioeconomic data with multivariate regression and machine learning techniques
This study models insured loss data against environmental and socioeconomic variables to derive empirical hail vulnerability functions. The loss data come from three major hailstorms that occurred in 2020, 2021, and 2024 across Calgary, Canada. Radar-derived Maximum Estimated Size of Hail (MESH) at 1 km resolution and satellite-based precipitation data at 8-km resolution are combined with nine socioeconomic variables transformed from 46 variables…
Stochastic modeling of radar-derived maximum estimated size of hail for scenario-based hail loss estimation
Integrated tsunami risk framework considering agent-based evacuation modelling
This study develops an integrated tsunami risk framework combining stochastic tsunami hazard and agent-based evacuation modelling. The framework is applied to the case of Saga, Kochi, Japan, with a population of ∼ 2,200 anticipated to experience significant tsunami events (∼ M9.0). First, stochastic earthquake source models are generated for two values of magnitudes (M8.8 and M9.0) and used to carry out stochastic tsunami inundation simulations. …
Hail hazard modeling with uncertainty analysis and roof damage estimation of residential buildings in North America
This research presents a statistical approach for hail risk modeling that incorporates the uncertainties of hail model prediction to provide insight into assessing the roof damage of a residential house in hail events. By quantifying the inherent uncertainties in evaluating hailstorm characteristics, this study extends the current existing hail models. The hail data are sourced from the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network (CoCoRaH…
Influence of local versus national datasets on seismic loss estimates
Integrated Bayesian Network and Strongest Path Method (BN-SPM) for effective multi-hazard risk assessment of interconnected infrastructure systems
Scenario-based earthquake risk assessment for central-southern Malawi
Multi-hazard earthquake-tsunami loss estimation of Kuroshio Town, Kochi Prefecture, Japan considering the Nankai-Tonankai megathrust rupture scenarios
Critical research in the water-related multi-hazard field
Relationships between earthquake insurance take-up rates and seismic risk indicators for Canadian households
A building classification scheme of housing stock in Malawi for earthquake risk assessment
This study presents a building classification scheme for residential houses in Malawi by focusing upon informal construction, which accounts for more than 90% of housing in the country with the highest urbanisation rate in the world. The proposed classification is compatible with the Prompt Assessment of Global Earthquakes for Response (PAGER) method and can be used for seismic vulnerability assessments of building stock in Malawi. To obtain real…
From Disaster to Sustainable Civil Society
Nine years after the Kobe earthquake in Japan, social issues are still prominent, and the rehabilitation process is still ongoing. The earthquake caused two major changes in Japanese society: an increase in voluntary and non-government activities, and the enhancement of cooperation between local government and the residents' association. People's participation in the decision-making process was a significant achievement. To sustain the efforts ge…
