  • The way forward

Open Access•Shawn K Baker, Christophe Breyne et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2011

Efforts to reduce mortality and undernutrition among infants and young children in the Sahelian countries of West and Central Africa have produced limited positive results. A series of recent publications have described the global prevalence and consequences of maternal and child undernutrition (1, 2), effective actions that can reduce undernutrition (3, 4), and the financial commitments that will be required to complete the necessary scaling up …

  • Effectiveness of a community-based intervention to improve nutrition in young children in Senegal

Open Access•Harold Alderman, Biram Ndiaye et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2009

There are few studies of community growth promotion as a means of addressing malnutrition that are based on longitudinal analysis of large-scale programmes with adequate controls to construct a counterfactual. The current study uses a difference in difference comparison of cohorts to assess the impact on the proportion of underweight children who lived in villages receiving services provided by the Senegal Nutrition Enhancement Project between 20…

  • Nutritional status of Haitian children, 1978-1995

    Open Access•Menno Mulder-Sibanda•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•1998

Results from three national surveys in Haiti suggest that the prevalence of stunting, underweight, and wasting in children fell considerably between 1978 and 1990. In the following four years, rates of stunting and underweight levelled off, while that of wasting nearly doubled. Child nutrition deteriorated dramatically during a period of intense political crisis and international sanctions that included a strictly enforced trade embargo. Human we…

  • Decentralized Data Management in Nutritional Surveillance for Timely Warning and Intervention

    Open Access•Menno Mulder‐sibanda, Menno Mulder-Sibanda et al.•ARTICLE•Disasters•1995•References: 5

In this paper we describe a theoretical approach for decentralized data management in sentinel community nutritional surveillance systems for timely warning and intervention, by using customized computer programs. By making the data available at lower levels first, the decentralized data management system builds the institutional capacity at regional, level and allows rapid and appropriate action by decision-makers. In addition, it facilitates th…
