The Company of Scotland trading to Africa and the Indies (Darien Company) was established by an act of parliament in 1695 as an overseas trading vehicle to boost the Scottish economy. Between 1698 and 1700 the Company unsuccessfully attempted to establish a colony at Darien on the isthmus of Central America.
