Metamodern in Indonesian Literature
Looking at contemporary Indonesian literature through the lenses of the novel A Night of 1,000 Traitors by Intan Paramaditha (2023), one can explore the further development of so-called late postmodernism. The novel demonstrates a comeback of forms, techniques, and aspirations inherent in realism, modernism, and postmodernism at the same time. According to the metamodern theory, meta- means the simultaneous presence of these elements in contempor…
Indonesia, Islam, and Literature
The goals of this paper are determined by the relevance of Islam in the light of modern Indonesian culture. For the first time in Russian oriental studies, an attempt has been made to determine the specifics of some literary texts that Indonesians call Muslim (literally “Islamic”) literature or sastra islami, which has been in demand for the local book market for two decades. Pulp Fiction
The article offers a detailed analysis and comparison of four works of popular Indonesian literature (two texts dd 1955 and two dd 1967) in order to trace the vectors of development of the detective genre in the Indonesian literature. The analysis precedes an excursion into the history of criminal genres in the literature of Indonesia. The study shows that, using the selected texts as an example, there is a certain difference between the detectiv…

It introduces the hitherto understudied material in Russia that counts only a small number of Indonesian and Anglophone works. The aims of this paper include collect…

Indonesian Yusuf and Zulaikha
The short story “Apple and Knife” (2008) by Indonesian writer Intan Paramaditha (born in 1979) is analysed within the comparative-typological framework of the Biblical and Quranic narrative about Yusuf and Zulaikha. The continuity of the motif transposition is traced from the literatures of the Middle East to that of the peoples of Nusantara who embraced Islam later. The intermediary was the Javanese Serat Yusup, which dates back to the 17th cent…
Indonesian Horror Story by Intan Paramaditha
Analysis and interpretation of the short stories by Indonesian female writer Intan Paramaditha (Intan Paramaditha, born in 1979) make it possible to understand that her writing occupies a special niche in the modern Indonesian literary paradigm. Paramaditha’s feminist texts are disguised as horror stories with settings in contemporary Indonesia. The article examines five short stories (“Spinner of Darkness” (Pemintal Kegelapan), “Vampire” (Vampir…
