    The Khartoum conurbation is composed of the three cities of Khartoum, Khartoum North and Omdurman, situated at the confluence of the Blue and White Niles (Fig. 1). Together these towns form the triple capital of the Sudan, and are by far the most dominant culturally, economically, and demographically.     The distribution of settlements in the Sudan is affected mainly by physical, political and socioeconomic factors.
