    IN the summer of 1579 Drake visited the coast of California in the course of his circumnavigation of the globe. At a bay which has not been strictly identified he remained for a month to refit. He named the country New Albion, and set up a plate of brass (or, by another account, of lead) with an inscription recording its annexation to the Crown of England.
