Waste disposal constitutes an acute problem in numerous African cities. One solution could lie in the recycling of the nutrient‐rich waste into agriculture taking place in and around cities. Tin mining carried out on the Jos Plateau since the beginning of the last century has disturbed some 320 km2 of agricultural land. Interdisciplinary work encourages porosity in disciplinary boundaries and the osmosis of knowledge. However, it depends on a willingness of those working within and across disciplines to build bridges instead of erecting walls.
