Green ideals and reality: Change in Bournville, UK 1879–1979
This study examines the transformation of green spaces in Bournville, UK, from its founding in the 1870s through to the 1970s, analysing how these spaces adapted to evolving societal needs and values. Originally developed by the Cadbury family as part of a garden suburb model, Bournville’s green spaces were designed to promote physical health and aesthetic sensibilities among workers, exemplified by the slogan ‘The Factory in a Garden.’ Over time…
Quiet’ green community innovations at the interface of public and private ownership in an old neighbourhood in Zhengzhou, China
This paper examines informal urban gardening practices within a 70‐year‐old industrial neighbourhood in Zhengzhou, central China, employing the conceptual framework of ‘annexed common space for private green infrastructure’ (ACS‐PGI). Through urban morphological and typological analysis, it interrogates how historical institutional legacies, urban land tenure regimes, local governance structures, socio‐spatial configurations and cultural‐agricult…

Standing on the shoulders of giants: A critique of Haslam (2018)
Town-plan analysis has evolved through detailed research in the course of well over half a century. Previous scholarship has provided a carefully defined, nested hierarchical terminology which has served the subject well. In this journal Jeremy Haslam has attempted to introduce a new term. His examples, which are meant to elucidate his new concept of ‘ensemble’ are marked by a failure to understand what large-scale maps do and do not show and a l…

Planning English medieval ‘street towns’: The Hertfordshire evidence
Urban landscapes are neglected by landscape history. This paper uses the sub-set of Hertfordshire medieval towns to investigate the topographical characteristics of the most common plan family' of English town-plan types: the 'street town'. It concentrates particularly on the influence of administrative boundaries and common land on the development of medieval urban topographies in this region. It then examines the characteristics of plot metrolo…
Encountering God: Personal reflections on ‘geographer as pilgrim’
The geography of religion can be explored from a number of different perspectives. This paper takes an autobiographical approach to explore the numinous experience of God from the point of view of a practising Christian geographer. Such geographical aspects of faith experience remain an under‐researched area. The context for the exploration is an academic conference in the city of Bologna, which became, in turn, an experience of religious tourism…

Locality‐based studies and the enterprise initiative
Experience in teaching a locality‐based studies course for the introduction of ‘enterprise’ elements into the geography curriculum at the University of Birmingham is reported and evaluated. Locality‐based studies courses provide a flexible base for devising and integrating a wide variety of student‐centred learning opportunities, including self‐directed field excursions, group project work, and employer partnerships

Ideal and Reality in English Episcopal Medieval Town Planning
The detailed planning of English medieval towns has received scant attention from scholars. Two towns in Midland England, Stratford-upon-Avon and Lichfield, founded in the twelfth century by episcopal lords are investigated to demonstrate the nature of the medieval town plans at the time of their foundation. It is shown that the ideal geometrical plan in the mind of the surveyor was adapted in a number of ways as development proceeded. First, fea…
Redbrick Academic Geography
The history of academic geography before 1945 has been explored in outline but the institutional setting of the new subject has been unduly neglected. The five 'redbrick' universities, established in the first years of the twentieth century, form a coherent group of institutions for which a comparative survey of the establishment of geography as an honours subject is presented. The links between the early teachers in these departments are explore…

The occurrence and significance of landscape parks as elements in British town plans is reported. This chronology is then expanded to formulate a general organizational framework applicable to all park-affected tow…
