  • The role of projects of common interest in reaching Europe's energy policy targets

Open Access•Bobby Xiong, Tom Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2026

The European Union aims to achieve climate-neutrality by 2050, with interim 2030 targets including 55% greenhouse gas emissions reduction compared to 1990 levels, 10 Mt p.a. of a domestic green hydrogen production, and 50 Mt p.a. of domestic CO 2 injection capacity. To support these targets, Projects of Common and Mutual Interest (PCI-PMI) — large infrastructure projects for electricity, hydrogen and CO 2 transport, and storage — have been identi…

  • Shifting burdens: How delayed decarbonisation of road transport affects other sectoral emission reductions

Open Access•Elisabeth Zeyen, Sina Kalweit et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2025

In 2022, fuel combustion in road transport accounted for approximately 21% (760 million tonnes) of CO 2 emissions in the European Union (EU). Transport is the only sector with rising emissions, with an increase of 24% compared to 1990. The EU initially aimed to ban new CO 2 -emitting cars by 2030 but has since delayed this target to 2035, underscoring the ongoing challenges in the push for rapid decarbonisation. • The “Pre-Codeness” of Only Yesterday (1933) in the Light of Letter from an Unknown Woman (1948): Discrepant Consciousness, Sexual Morality and the Hollywood Production Code

    Open Access•Tom Brown•ARTICLE•Quarterly Review of Film Studies•2025•References: 11

This essay considers a John Stahl-directed “melodrama of the unknown woman” in the light of Max Ophuls’ more famous example. Examining the Studio Relations Committee’s input on the production of Only Yesterday (1933), this essay adds to the ample scholarship that has shown that the early-1930s was in no meaningful way “pre” the Hollywood Production Code. However, pursuing close textual analysis/criticism of the film’s approach to narrative focali…

  • Temporal regulation of renewable supply for electrolytic hydrogen

Open Access•Elisabeth Zeyen, Iegor Riepin et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2024

Electrolytic hydrogen produced using renewable electricity can help lower carbon dioxide emissions in sectors where feedstocks, reducing agents, dense fuels or high temperatures are required. This study investigates the implications of various standards being proposed to certify that the grid electricity used is renewable. The standards vary in how strictly they match the renewable generation to the electrolyser demand in time and space. Using an…

  • Abraham Lincoln in the Hollywood cinema

    Open Access•Tom Brown•ARTICLE•Open Screens•2023

Abraham Lincoln is a towering figure in American popular consciousness, one who acts as a rich and complex motif and metaphor across its cinema history. This essay is broad-ranging in considering Hollywood’s Lincoln but places particular emphasis on ‘classical’ representations. Its primary aim is to consider the cinematic uses of Lincoln (Lincoln as embedded in the style and rhetoric of a range of films) but a minor thread running through is why …

  • The Use of a Constructed Wetland to Tread Landfarm Leachate at to Sioco Refinery in Salvia, Ontario

James Higgins, James P Higgins et al.•CHAPTER•Constructed Wetlands for the…•2018

A petroleum refinery operates a landfarm to biodegrade liquid and solid industrial wastes. It is underlain by a tile bed, and treated leachate from it is collected in a retention pond. The refinery wanted to consider options other than trucking, but determined that piping the leachate back to the refinery would be prohibitively expensive. Evaluations of wetland and related treatment options as alternates were carried out. This paper presents anal…

  • Spectacle/gender/history: The case of Gone with the Wind

    Tom Brown•ARTICLE•Screen•2008•Cited by: 3

The essay asserts that, since pioneering work in the 1970s and 80s (in Screen in particular), the study of classical Hollywood cinema has failed adequately to acknowledge and understand the role of spectacle therein. This essay outlines theoretical but, even more, practical understandings of particular kinds of spectacle; they are susceptible to the practice of close analysis. Seeking to discuss spectacle in precise terms and in particular contex…

This paper examines the emergence, over the past three decades, of innovative folklore motifs in “The Hunting of the Earl of Rone,” in the Devon village of Combe Martin. This calendar custom, which was extant prior to 1837, was reconstructed in 1970 and has now become an established annual tradition. Detailed records of the source, stimulus and function of the various “new” elements (including plant-lore, dance steps, cross-dressing and rites of …

  • A Proposed Model of Bisexual Identity Development that Elaborates on Experiential Differences of Women and Men

    Tom Brown•ARTICLE•Journal of Bisexuality•2002•Cited by: 19•References: 23

Bisexuals have experiences that make them unique as a group. Thus, it would seem reasonable to have a model of identity development for this group. This article reviews theoretical and empirical models of lesbian, gay, and bisexual identity development. A new model of bisexual identity development is then proposed, containing research from lesbian and gay identity development models to serve as hypotheses. These hypotheses serve to help better un…

The results for 63 family nurse practitioners, including 3 males, on the Strong Vocational Interest Blank, the Omnibus Personality Inventory, and Cattell's 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire, indicate this group was most similar to the general population. The results of the Myers-Briggs Type I…
