The Use History of Small Roomblocks in Pueblo III Period Settlement Clusters of the El Morro Valley, New Mexico
This paper examines the use history of roomblocks within a Post-Chacoan era community in the El Morro Valley, New Mexico. It estimates the resident population and calculates the occupation span of two small roomblocks in the Los Gigantes site cluster (LA 56159), a group of more than a dozen residential pueblos dating to the late Pueblo III period (circa AD 1225 - 1275). The roomblocks and surrounding use areas were excavated using an intensive st…

Pioneer Spirit
The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth (scn) was one of two congregations of Catholic sisters founded in 1812 in the “American Holy Land” surrounding Bardstown, Kentucky. Although Catherine Spalding was not the first woman to enter the community, she became its first and most influential leader and, as such, is traditionally regarded as its foundress. With Pioneer Spirit, Mary Ellen Doyle—herself a member of the scn—has written the first full-length …
The Nomads of the Balkans
A Latin Inscription from Perrhaebia
In April, 1911, during an exploring journey undertaken on behalf of the Macedonian Exploration Fund, while travelling from Serfije to Elassona we were fortunate enough to discover the important Latin inscription here published. It lies in the ruined church of the Holy Trinity ( ̔Α γία Τ ριάς) on the right bank of the Sarantaporos, about five minutes to the north of the gendarmerie post by the Khan of Hajji Zhogu, on the high road some three hours…

The Distribution of Early Civilization in Northern Greece
I.—Excavations at Sparta, 1909
A little to the south of Sparta and opposite the hamlet of Psychiko, at the point where the Magoula river runs into the Eurotas, the hills on the left or eastern bank of the latter approach quite close to the river. These hills, which stand high above the plain, have long been identified with those on which, according to Polybius, the Menelaion stood, and as the site of Therapnai. In fact the statements of this author and of Livy make it practica…
A Cave of the Nymphs on Mount Ossa
On the north-west side of the great central cone of Mount Ossa a wide fissure runs right across the mountain from Mega Keserlì to Tságezi. On the south side of this fissure and at the base of the central cone lies the village of Spiliá, which is to be distinguished from another village of the same name near Laspochori at the eastern entrance to Tempe. To the north of the fissure rises a peak known as Pláka, which is the part of Ossa that directly…
Excavations at Zerélia, Thessaly
The mound known as Zerélia stands on a hill between two small lakes to the south-west of Almyró in Phthiotis (Fig. 1). Recent writers on the topography of the district have conjectured that this was the site of Itonos and the famous temple of Athena Itonia. We first visited the site in July 1907, and believed, that apart from the question of the site of the temple, it would repay excavation, since we recognised that the mound (Fig. 2) was probabl…
