On 17 September 1926, at eleven o'clock in the morning the Foreign Ministers of France and Germany emerged from their respective Geneva hotels. To evade newspaper reporters, they travelled by motor boat across Lake Geneva and crossed the border by car into France. There, at a restaurant in a small village at the base of the Jura mountains, they had a four-hour luncheon conversation. The men were Aristide Briand
