  • Icings in the Selenga River basin

    Open Access•Vladimir Chernykh, Chernykh V et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2024

In this study, we present a GIS dataset and map of icings formed in the transboundary Selenga River basin (largest tributary of the Lake Baikal). The GIS dataset of icings is compiled using Landsat and Sentinel-2 satellite images, as well as materials from the field expedition studies. It contains 29,054 individual icings with a total area of 1154.2 km2 (0.25% of the entire basin area), including at least 56 giant icings with an area ≥ 1 km2. Ici…

  • Comparative analysis of driving forces of land use/cover change in the upper, middle and lower reaches of the Selenga River Basin

Open Access•Yang Ren, Zehong Li et al.•ARTICLE•Land Use Policy•2022•References: 10

  • Groundwater age of spring discharges under changing permafrost conditions

Open Access•Tetsuya Hiyama, Avirmed Dashtseren et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

Obtaining a better understanding of groundwater dynamics in permafrost zones is a critical issue in permafrost hydrology. This includes assessing the impacts of climate change on permafrost thaw and ground ice-melt. Both permafrost thaw and ground ice-melt can be related to groundwater discharges (i.e. spring discharges), and spring water is an important local water resource; accordingly, changes in these processes can have large impacts on local…

  • An Estimated Contribution of Glacier Runoff to Mongolia's Upper Khovd River Basin in the Altai Mountains

Open Access•Caleb G Pan, Ulrich Kamp et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2019

In the semiarid climate of northwestern Mongolia, glaciers are critical contributors to water resources, particularly during the dry summer months. Nevertheless, our knowledge of the contribution of glacier runoff in the Upper Khovd River Basin (UKRB) is limited. This study investigates the impact of glacier recession on the UKRB's hydrology in western Mongolia's Altai Mountains. The analysis included glaciological method measurements, satellite-…

  • Documenting glacial changes between 1910, 1970, 1992 and 2010 in theTurgenMountains,MongolianAltai, using repeat photographs, topographic maps, and satellite imagery

Open Access•Ulrich Kamp, Kevin Gregory Mcmanigal et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•2013•References: 25

TheTurgenMountains lie in northwesternMongolia, roughly 80 km south of theRussian border. The area was visited in 1910 by aRoyalGeographicalSociety expedition led byDouglasCarruthers. The party undertook an extensive survey of the range and also documented the extent of the glaciers with photographs. One hundred years later, in summer 2010, aUS-Mongolian expedition retraced portions of the 1910 expedition. Camera locations were matched to the his…
