David Higgitt, Karl Donert et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography in Higher…•2008•Cited by: 5•References: 12

This paper is concerned with the role of international collaboration in the learning and teaching of geography in higher education. The dual aims are to provide a brief and selective review of the nature and range of international collaboration and to contextualize such observations within the internationalization project. It is argued that despite the growing interest and literature concerned with the internationalization of higher education, di…

Ian C Fuller, Ian Fuller et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography in Higher…•2006•Cited by: 26•References: 18

This paper seeks to address assumptions on the effectiveness of fieldwork as a mode of learning in geography. This is approached from an international perspective, both in review of available evidence, which demonstrates a need for rigorous research into the issue, and in providing preliminary findings of research into the value of fieldwork from universities across three continents. Common themes to emerge concern the effectiveness of fieldwork …

    David Higgitt•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography in Higher…•2006•References: 3

The promotion of education for sustainable development (ESD) is likely to be constrained by its compatibility with other missions and objectives of higher education institutions (HEIs). Finding space for ESD in the Enterprise Economy invites consideration of opportunities for increasing the visibility and audibility of environmental messages in HE sectors primarily committed to equipping national economies with skilled graduates. A survey of unde…

Fieldwork is a distinctive feature of geography in higher education and is therefore a subject that is likely to be scrutinised by an emerging international network. Originating from an Internet discussion, the paper considers the context of internationalism for the enhancement of fieldwork practices. These broadly comprise opportunities to debate and discuss pedagogic issues about fieldwork in an international forum and to facilitate more effect…

  • Geomorphology of the eastern Badia basalt plateau, Jordan

    Open Access•Robert J Allison, James R Grove et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•2000•Cited by: 4•References: 25

The eastern Badia of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is a landscape developed predominantly on late Tertiary and Quaternary basalt lava flows, which vary in age between 8.9 million and 0.1 million years. Pyroclastic deposits are associated with remnant volcanic cones. There is limited, seasonal rainfall. Natural vegetation regenerates during cool, damp months. Slopes, which range from concave to convex forms and have varying relief, can be relate…

Open Access•Peng Bu-zhuo, Peng Buzhuo et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•1997

China has a rich variety of mountain vegetation and soil types, displaying characteristic zoning at different altitudes. Vertical zonation of landscape characteristics is also influenced by longitude, latitude, aspect, and microclimate. Namjagbarwa Feng (7,782 m) is situated in the eastern Himalaya and has a relative relief of over 7,000 m. It has a range of vertical landscape zones from quasi-tropical to snow and ice conditions and the character…

  • The effectiveness of student‐authored field trails as a means of enhancing geomorphological interpretation

    David L Higgitt, David Higgitt•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography in Higher…•1996•Cited by: 4•References: 4

A course developed to enhance students’ appreciation of local geomorphology through the construction of interpretive field trails is described. Students work in teams to produce a trail leaflet and designs for information boards. The emphasis on field‐based activity, student‐led participation and the notion of a target audience differs from traditional geomorphology courses. The extent to which these skills complement other geomorphological teach…
