General Bayesian time‐varying parameter vector autoregressions for modeling government bond yields
US yield curve dynamics are subject to time‐variation, but there is ambiguity about its precise form. This paper develops a vector autoregressive (VAR) model with time‐varying parameters and stochastic volatility, which treats the nature of parameter dynamics as unknown. Coefficients can evolve according to a random walk, a Markov switching process, observed predictors, or depend on a mixture of these. To decide which form is supported by the dat…

The temporal and spatial quantification of Holocene sediment dynamics in a meso-scale catchment in northern Bavaria, Germany
The Aufsess River catchment (97 km 2 ) in northern Bavaria, Germany, is studied to establish a Holocene sediment budget and to investigate the sediment dynamics since the early times of farming in the third millennium BCE. The temporal characterization of the sediment dynamics is based on an intensive dating program with 73 OSL and 14 14 C ages. To estimate soil erosion and deposition, colluvial and alluvial archives are investigated in the field…

Spatial Growth Regressions: Model Specification, Estimation and Interpretation
We attempt to clarify a number of points regarding use of spatial regression models for regional growth analysis. We show that as in the case of non-spatial growth regressions, the effect of initial regional income levels wears off over time. Unlike the non-spatial case, long-run regional income levels depend on: own region as well as neighbouring region characteristics, the spatial connectivity structure of the regions, and the strength of spati…

Spatial knowledge spillovers and university research: Evidence from Austria
This paper provides some evidence on the importance of geographically mediated knowledge spillovers from university research activities to regional knowledge production in high-technology industries in Austria. Spillovers occur because knowledge created by universities has some of the characteristics of public goods, and creates value for firms and other organisations. The paper lies in the research tradition that finds thinking in terms of a pro…

Computational Neural Networks: A New Paradigm for Spatial Analysis
In this paper a systematic introduction to computational neural network models is given in order to help spatial analysts learn about this exciting new field. The power of computational neural networks viz-à-viz conventional modelling is illustrated for an application field with noisy data of limited record length: spatial interaction modelling of telecommunication data in Austria. The computational appeal of neural networks for solving some fund…

Technology, Organization and Export-Driven Research and Development In Austria'S Electronics Industry
SUAREZ-VILLA L. and FISCHER M. M. (1995) Technology, organization and export-driven research and development in Austria's electronics industry, Reg. Studies 29, 19–42. Over the past two decades Austria's export-driven electronics industry has experienced a progressive territorial distribution that has substantially decentralized production and employment. Nevertheless, the capital region's concentration has provided many advantages to R & D-inten…

FISCHER M. M., FRöHLICH J. and GASSLER H. (1994) An exploration into the determinants of patent activities: some empirical evidence for Austria, Reg. Studies 28, 1-12. The recent computerization of the Austrian Patent Office in the mid-1980s has made it possible now to analyse the patenting behaviour at the firm level over a certain time period. This makes patents an easily accessible, quantitative indicator of patented inventions and, more gener…

Innovation and Technological Change: An Austrian-British Comparison
Despite a growing body of empirical evidence that demonstrates the nature of spatial variations in innovation and the adoption of new technologies, few studies have been conducted in such a way as to enable direct comparisons between different countries, either to establish international differences in innovative performance or to identify differences in regional patterns in different national contexts, particularly between EC and non-EC countrie…

A Choice-Theoretical Labour-Market Model: Empirical Tests at the Mesolevel
This paper contains an analysis of a multiregional labour-supply model for Austria. In the approach suggested here attempts are made to combine the advantages of random-utility-based discrete choice theory and partial reduced-form estimation. Two recursive submodels, the labour-force participation submodel, and the commuting and employment submodel, are developed. Three different types of model specifications at the mesolevel are used to analyse …

Log-Linear Modelling and Spatial Analysis
In the past decade the social sciences have seen an upsurge of interest in analysing multidimensional contingency tables using log-linear models. Two broad families of log-linear models may be distinguished: the family of conventional models and the family of unconventional models (that is, quasi-log-linear and hybrid models). In this paper a brief review of such models is presented and some linkage to the class of generalised linear models sugge…
