Determinants of zero-car and car-owning apartment households
While much research has explored the determinants of car ownership, there is little understanding of these factors in the context of apartment households, where off-street car parking provision is frequently stipulated by planning requirements and zero-car households are more evident. Drawing on a survey of apartment residents (n = 1316) in three Australian cities, this study aimed to understand the determinants of zero-car and car-owning apartme…
A tour-based SP-off-RP survey for combined time period and mode choice
This paper reports on a travel survey conducted in Austria in 2019/2020. The aim was to generate 1250 stated preference (SP) interviews using four types of SP experiments, which were based on revealed tours of respondents (tour-based SP-off-RP). The data were to be used as input for a new national tour-based transport model. The core element is a combined time period and mode choice experiment with several innovative new features, which aim to pr…
Can repeated surveys reveal the variation of the value of travel time over time
This paper studies intertemporal changes in the value of travel time (VTT) and investigates whether the change of VTT over time can be studied based on national VTT data, collected at two points in time. We use repeated national VTT data from the Netherlands and Sweden, collected 13 and 14 years apart. The results show mostly a declining VTT for a given income level. The results show also a large within-country heterogeneity across modes and purp…
The value of travel time savings in freight transport
The value of freight travel time savings (VFTTS) is a monetary value that is considered an important input into cost–benefit analysis and traffic forecasting. The VFTTS is defined as the marginal rate of substitution between travel time and cost and may therefore differ across firms, time and countries. The paper aims to explain variations in the VFTTS by using the meta-analysis method. The analysis covers 106 monetary valuations extracted from 5…
