  • El Niño-Southern Oscillation impacts in a coffee growing region of Colombia and adaptations mechanisms among coffee producers

    Open Access•Juan Mauricio Bedoya-Soto, Erika Acevedo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Environmental Studies…•2025•References: 6

Understanding the vulnerability of coffee production to shifting climate patterns is a global concern. In the Colombian Andes, specifically within the Chinchiná river basin (CRB), where the local economy relies heavily on coffee production, we investigate how coffee serves as a mediator between the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and local producers. Our qualitative/quantitative study at nine coffee farms focuses on the strong events of El Ni…

  • Agricultural Producers’ Views of Climate Change in the Canadian Prairies

    Amber J Fletcher, Margot Hurlbert et al.•ARTICLE•Society & Natural Resources•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Farmers and ranchers in the Canadian Prairies are at risk of climate extremes, yet climate change remains a divisive topic. This paper draws on qualitative interviews with 33 agricultural producers who discussed climate change during a larger project on adaptation to climate extremes. We inductively analyzed climate change beliefs and perceptions into five themes. Common themes included uncertainty and attribution skepticism (i.e., attribution of…

Open Access•Jeannine-Marie St Jacques, Suzan Lapp et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2013

  • A paleoclimatic context for the drought of 1999-2001 in the northern Great Plains of North America

    Open Access•David J Sauchyn, David Sauchyn et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•2003•Cited by: 5•References: 13

The least annual precipitation in the western interior of North America occurs in the northern Great Plains, including an area that encompasses parts of south-eastern Alberta, south-western Saskatchewan and eastern Montana. During 1999-2001, most climate stations in this region had record low precipitation. This paper examines this three-year drought in the context of historical climate records from Medicine Hat, Alberta and Havre, Montana and su…

  • Recent Environmental Change in the Southwestern Canadian Plains

    Open Access•David J Sauchyn, David Sauchyn et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Geographies /…•1998•Cited by: 4•References: 52

This paper examines 20th‐century environmental change in the subhumid southwestern Canadian Plains, specifically in relation to the dominant agricultural landscape and to the climate of the past millennium as reconstructed from proxy data. Anthropogenic landscape change in the last century has been dominated by the conversion of grasslands to ranchland and cropland. This has heightened landscape vulnerability to climatic fluctuations, especially …
