The Lies of the Land: Seeing Rural America for What It Is—and Isn't
In The Lies of the Land: Seeing Rural America for What It Is—and Isn't, author Steven Conn claims to be debunking many a myth about rural America. First, he spends significant time discussing the fact that rural is virtually undefinable. Second, he argues that the idea of rural America being in crisis is utterly ridiculous. How can a place be in crisis if economic hardship is a perpetual state? Then, the author claims there is nothing unique abou…

Reflections on the 1980s and After: An Interview by Pamela Riney-Kehrberg with Paul Lasley and David Ostendorf, February 24, 2022
Paul lasley and david ostendorf were crucial participants in Iowa's response to the Farm Crisis of the 1980s. Paul Lasley had just finished his PhD and a postdoc in rural sociology at the University of Missouri when he came to Iowa State University. He worked on many projects that helped farmers cope with the decade's troubles, and often mediated between competing groups in his position with Iowa State Cooperative Extension. He was the founding e…
Farm Crisis/Identity Crisis: Letters from 1980s Iowa
The Farm Crisis of the 1980s was not just an economic crisis, but an identity crisis for the two-thirds of Iowa farm families that risked losing their livelihoods. Confronted with a situation that was well outside of their control, they sent thousands of letters to government officials, asking for, and sometimes demanding, answers. Many of those letters expressed puzzlement, anger, and disappointment as writers tried to explain how the hopes and …
Iowa and the Importance of State and Local History
PAMELA RINEY-KEHRBERG considers how moments in Iowa history contribute to our understanding of the complexity within broader national and international narratives. Through four key examples—woman suffrage, Buxton, Iowa, Varnum v. Brien, and the 1980s Farm Crisis—she demonstrates the rich insights that can be gleaned through state and local history
Legacies of Dust: Land Use and Labor on the Colorado Plains
Douglas Sheflin's Legacies of Dust is a significant addition to the Dust Bowl historiography. Unlike previous works, his focuses exclusively on southeastern Colorado, one of the lesser-known corners of the southern Great Plains. By siting his study there, he is able to compare the experiences of two different counties. Prowers County had the good fortune of being able to tap the Arkansas River, which modified the county's experience with serious …

Photogrammar
Photogrammar makes the vast photographic collections of the Farm Security Administration and Office of War Information (fsa-owi) more available to users. The most important part of the Web site is the wonderfully detailed interactive map, allowing users to sift approximately eighty-eight thousand fsa-owi photographs, taken between 1935 and 1945, by both location and year. Users can click on individual photographs to find out the subject, photogra…
Historians' Reaction to the Documentary, The Dust Bowl
Historical documentaries have a wider audience and often a greater visceral impact than written histories. They frequently resonate deeply with viewers through the use of images, first-person narratives, and evocative filming. To wield such emotional power responsibly demands great attention to accuracy and nuance. In the fall of 2013 these four historians met at the Northern Great Plains History Conference to discuss Ken Burns's latest work on t…

Farm Youth and Progressive Agricultural Reform: Dexter D. Mayne and the Farm Boy Cavaliers of America

Progressive reformers responded to this crisis with various suggestions meant to more firmly attach youngsters to their rural roots. Among the many solutions advocated were rural youth organizations. The Farm Boy Cavaliers of America, which also enrolled girls, pursued a more innovative path than most, emphasizi…

Delivering Aid: Implementing Progressive Era Welfare in the American West
In Delivering Aid, Thomas A. Krainz has tackled the knotty issue of state aid to the indigent. Focusing on Colorado, he explains the reasons for widely divergent welfare practices within a single state. By teasing out issues of ethnicity, religion, economy, and environment, as well as a host of other contributing factors, he shows that local officials crafted policies to meet their community's needs, often disregarding larger issues of state or f…

Women, Technology, and Rural Life: Some Recent Literature
Historical study of American farm women has had a relatively short life, reaching back approximately twenty years.' Rural women rarely existed in earlier scholarship that reserved the categories of farmer and farming for males. Broke in Spirits: Death, Depression, and Endurance through Writing
Women's history has often been described as an attempt to recover lost and hidden histories. Within those hidden histories are the voices of generations of mothers and grandmothers, women who may have been too reticent to share many aspects of their lives, even with those closest to them. Although the parameters of women's history have widened considerably in the last thirty years, there are many facets of the female experience that have yet to b…
