  • Understanding community resilience during the drinking water contamination event on Oahu, Hawaii, 2021–2022: A mixed mode approach

Open Access•Vidisha Parasram, Amanda R Smith et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

The findings show that environmental disasters have significant disruptive and mental health impacts from stress. Identified themes can inform and improve emergency response and communication strategies and increase trust with community members during and after large chemical exposure events

  • Nietzsche’s Genealogy in Its Relation to History and Philosophy

    Open Access•Joshua Rayman•ARTICLE•Genealogy•2022•References: 11

Nietzsche’s sparse remarks on genealogy have left open significant questions as to what it is and where it stands in relation to philology, history, critique, and philosophy. By tracing Nietzsche’s associated conceptions of philology; critical, monumental, and antiquarian history; genesis; and Entstehungsgeschichte; as well as his genealogical practices, I show that, with certain key limitations, Nietzschean genealogy emerges from out of the synt…

  • Nietzsche's Early and Late Conceptions of Time and Eternal Recurrence

    Open Access•Joshua Rayman•ARTICLE•History and Theory•2022

Friedrich Nietzsche's late notions of time and eternal recurrence are semiotically concentrated concepts, tacitly freighted by their history. What we think they mean on their face is other than their history testifies. Examination of Nietzsche's early writings reveals multiple branching possibilities within his mature conceptions of time and eternal recurrence. His key early texts on time, space, and history-the apparently anomalous, five-page ea…

  • Chronic environmental contamination: A narrative review of psychosocial health consequences, risk factors, and pathways to community resilience

Open Access•Daniel Sullivan, Dan Sullivan et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2021

  • China’s challenge to world development paradigms

    Joshua Rayman•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Ethics•2021•References: 9

The past forty years of world development have seen multiple operational frameworks, most notably, the neoliberal Washington Consensus or structural adjustment policies (1981–2001), the international development framework guided by the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDG, 2000–2015), and the Chinese Economic Model or Beijing Consensus emerging from Deng Xiaoping’s reforms (1978-present). I criticize the Washington Consensus as an eco…

  • Self-Understanding and Lifeworld: Basic Traits of a Phenomenological Hermeneutics

  • Heidegger’s Biological Nietzsche”

    Joshua Rayman•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Philosophy•2017•References: 15

Heidegger’s lecture courses on Nietzsche give prominent attention to the question of what he calls “Nietzsche’s Alleged Biologism”. This biologism is what has been labelled the official Nazi reading of Nietzsche. Yet, there is no single Nazi reading of Nietzsche. There were biologistic and non-biologistic Nazi readings of Nietzsche, as well as anti-Nietzschean Nazis such as Ernst Krieck who denied that his philosophy was either socialist, nationa…

  • Will to Power as Alternative to Causality

    Joshua Rayman•ARTICLE•The Journal of Speculative…•2016

The radicality of Nietzsche's critique of causality has been overlooked by Nietzschean naturalists, who carry on with their appeals to causal-scientific forms of explanation as if there were no such critique. But the force of his critique is far broader, for he sees causality as the nexus or foundation of metaphysics in general. In the absence of causality, it is as if we are “wandering as through an infinite nothing,” deprived of conceptual desc…

  • Entrenched: A Genealogy of the Analytic-Continental Divide

Joshua Rayman, Philosophy Documentation Center•ARTICLE•Radical Philosophy Review•2010

The conventional view is that analytic philosophy has dominated American philosophy departments since 1950 and that continental philosophy and pragmatism have been marginalized almost out of existence due to philosophical inferiority or McCarthyist persecution. But a precise historical treatment of transformations in the field shows that this is, in fact, the golden age of continental philosophy and pragmatist scholarship, that McCarthyism had no…
