  • The Vision of the Municipal Left

    Kim Phillips-Fein, Kim Phillips‐fein•ARTICLE•Labor Studies in Working-Class…•2026

This article looks at the career of City Councilman Peter V. Cacchione, a Communist Party member. The article argues that Cacchione’s political success was possible because of the unusual dynamics of New York City in the late 1930s and 1940s: in particular, the reform coalition that made proportional representation possible. It was also driven by the unusual strategies of the Communist Party during the Popular Front period and the wartime years, …

  • Eli and the Octopus

    Kim Phillips-Fein, Kim Phillips‐fein•ARTICLE•Labor Studies in Working-Class…•2024

On February 5, 1975, Eli Black, the chief executive of the agricultural conglomerate United Brands, died by suicide after jumping from the window of his office skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan. United Brands was an unusual company, owning a range of subsidiary agricultural producers. Central to its holdings was the notorious United Fruit, the world's largest producer of bananas, which had a long history of violence toward any workers who sought to…

  • Set the Night on Fire

    Kim Phillips‐fein•ARTICLE•Labor Studies in Working-Class…•2022•Cited by: 1

Los Angeles holds an outsize place in the cultural imagination: a land of glamor and celebrity but also of dispossession. It is a city where nothing is hidden and yet nothing is faced head-on. The dream factory of Hollywood and the endless-summer sunshine, low-slung houses and highways belie the myriad exploitations of those who come to the city dreaming of discovery. The city has come to play, as Mike Davis put it in his 1990 historical meditati…

  • The Conservative Heartland

    Open Access•Kim Phillips-Fein, Kim Phillips‐fein•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2021

The cover image of The Conservative Heartland, co-edited by Jon K. Lauck and Catherine McNicol Stock, might now appear out of date: it depicts the twelve midwestern states (from the Dakotas to Ohio) as a solid red bloc. But the events of the first week of November 2020 demonstrate the book's premise, which is that the Midwest remains a region of great electoral importance. Why should the “blue wall” states of the Midwest be such a politically vol…

  • Vc

    Open Access•Kim Phillips-Fein, Kim Phillips‐fein•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2021

In Vc: An American History Tom Nicholas provides an exploration of the history of the venture capital industry in the United States, proceeding (as its subtitle suggests) from the assumption that it “is largely an American invention” (p. 1). The term venture capital refers to firms that provide funding to new companies in hopes of reaping substantial profits for their partners should their bets pay off. Today, the industry is associated with the …

  • A Fight between Two Systems of Thought

    Open Access•Kim Phillips-Fein, Kim Phillips‐fein•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2021

One evening in June 1938, the Wichita evangelist Gerald Burton Winrod made a campaign speech before an audience of approximately 450 people in Fremont Park in the city of Emporia, Kansas, as part of his bid to become the Republican nominee for the Senate. Although “Onward Christian Soldiers” blasted from a sound truck before he began, his address focused on the failures of the Franklin D. Roosevelt administration to redress the economic devastati…

  • Steven Attewell. People Must Live by Work

    Open Access•Kim Phillips-Fein, Kim Phillips‐fein•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2020

When Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Edward Markey released their proposal for a Green New Deal in February 2019, one of the pillars of the program was the “job guarantee”—a proposal that the federal government would be legally obligated to provide work to anyone seeking employment on the massive public projects needed to move the American economy away from its dependence on fossil fuels. Like many aspects of the ambitious proposal, the notion of th…

  • Contesting the Postwar City

    Kim Phillips‐fein•ARTICLE•Labor Studies in Working-Class…•2018

In this remarkable book, Eric Fure-Slocum charts the emergence of “growth politics” in Milwaukee over the course of the 1940s. Delving deep into local archives and newspapers, Fure-Slocum provides a detailed, closely argued study of a single Midwestern city. Yet even as Contesting the Postwar City brings Milwaukee during and immediately after World War II to life, it also illuminates a larger debate over the nature of urban life in the postwar ye…

  • Author’s Response

    Kim Phillips‐fein•ARTICLE•Labor Studies in Working-Class…•2018

I am tremendously honored by Lane Windham’s, Bill Fletcher’s, Suleiman Osman’s and Michael Kazin’s generous, thoughtful responses to my book, as well as by Joseph McCartin’s introduction to this forum. These are five intellectuals and scholars from whom I have learned much, and whose scholarship and activism alike has been a model for me. I deeply appreciate the time they took to think about Fear City, and I am grateful to the Kalmanowitz Initiat…

  • The President and American Capitalism since 1945

    Kim Phillips-Fein, Kim Phillips‐fein•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2018

This excellent collection joins the growing body of literature on the interaction of the U.S. political and economic spheres. Much of the work on the history of capitalism has been focused on the nineteenth century, especially the histories of slavery and finance in that period. In a sense, it has been primarily concerned with the forces that brought capitalism into being, on the creation of markets in people, land, and money. The question of wha…

  • Caught in the Web

    Open Access•Kim Phillips-Fein, Kim Phillips‐fein•ARTICLE•New Labor Forum•2010

Read by libertarians, pacifists, leftists, greens,' and independents alike (according to the site), it is a rich source of news both about the empire and about the antiwar movement. It reveals a sharply different vision of world affairs; for example, readers could find stories about the Senate Appropriations Committee agreeing to hundreds of billions of dollars more for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the pressure on the United States to ge…
