  • Lamentable inconsistency

    Anne E Marshall•ARTICLE•Slavery and Abolition•2020

This article examines the career of Kentucky emancipationist Cassius Marcellus Clay during the years 1844–1846. During this period, Clay became a nationally known anti-slavery spokesman, forging ties with activists in the Midwest and the North and beginning publication of his newspaper, The True American. Amid his rise to prominence, Clay did two remarkable things: he manumitted several (but not all) of his own slaves, and he pressed charges of m…

  • Civil War Governors of Kentucky Digital Documentary Edition

Anne Marshall, Anne E Marshall et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2017

The bureaucratic name of this digital project belies the rich diversity of its contents. Within the voluminous gubernatorial correspondence appear, as the Web site claims, “generals and politicians, prostitutes and plantation mistresses, free African American professionals and ‘contraband refugees,’” whose correspondence, court cases, and petitions came across the desks of five Kentucky governors in office during the conflict. More interesting st…

  • Teachers’ Perceptions Structured through Facet Theory

Open Access•Nava Maslovaty, Anne E Marshall et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•2001

This article examines Guttman’s facet theory (FT) and compares it to factor analysis (FA) in the context of two research studies. FT is examined in terms of its advantages and disadvantages compared to FA for theory development and confirmation. Two studies provide insights into the utility of FT. The first describes ideal student traits as perceived by prospective teachers. Using FT and smallest space analysis (SSA) confirmed the theory by displ…

  • A Decision-Tree Approach to the Interpretation of Archaeological Data

    Open Access•Anne Marshall, Anne E Marshall et al.•ARTICLE•The Antiquaries Journal•1994•Cited by: 1•References: 7

A number of techniques capable of generating descriptions of data have been developed in the area of Artificial Intelligence. Their suitability for use with a data set compiled to record the details of Anglo-Saxon structures in Britain is considered. An appropriate method which describes the data by means of decision trees is chosen and, after some adaptation, is used to generate descriptions of this data in the form of decision trees. The result…

  • Differentiation, Change and Continuity in Anglo-Saxon Buildings

    Anne Marshall, Anne E Marshall et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Journal•1993•Cited by: 9•References: 1

A data base containing details of all the published Anglo-Saxon buildings constructed in timber has been created in the course of previous work. In this paper, a systematic analysis of the contents of the data base is presented with particular reference to regional differences in the buildings and their chronological development. From this, spatial and temporal patterns of evolution of the buildings are determined, and are briefly compared with t…

  • A Survey and Analysis of the Buildings of Early and Middle Anglo-Saxon England

    Anne Marshall, Anne E Marshall et al.•ARTICLE•Medieval Archaeology•1991•Cited by: 4•References: 8

A DATA BASE containing all the information available to the authors on Anglo-Saxon structures has been devised and installed on a computer. A preliminary analysis of the data concentrating on the dimensions of the buildings has revealed some significant trends in their lengths, widths and proportions. These trends are interpreted within what is known of the social and economic context of the period. In addition, a method of comparing the complete…

  • An Early Medieval Building Tradition

Simon James, Anne Marshall et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Journal•1984•Cited by: 21•References: 5

Excavations have recently produced valuable new evidence for the structural types used in the vernacular architecture of lowland and eastern Britain during the sixth-eighth centuries A.D. The evidence from a number of contemporaneous sites suggests that a highly characteristic building tradition was in widespread use. The identifying features of this building tradition are defined and its affinities discussed
