National incentive plans, labor policies and DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) regulations actively encourage Emirati women’s participation in the UAE employment sector. Women are the face of the future workforce in emerging economies and Emirati females are leading the charge in equalizing gender balance within companies operating in the UAE . Young Emirati women are a particularly salient force in the UAE labor market. Sociocultural, econom…

  • Multispecies Entanglements in the Gulf

    Marek Wieczorek•ARTICLE•Anthrozoös•2024•References: 27

This paper is a product of qualitative, ethnographic fieldwork which looked at interactions between Emirati people and camels. Both in traditional Bedu contexts and among contemporary breeders/riders/racers in the Arabian Gulf, camels have been useful to people as an economic resource or symbolic tool, but they have also been agents creating paths for human cultural activity. They are the lens through which people observe their society, yet they …

  • Portuguese Saudade, the Trajectories of Longing and Desire

    Marek Wieczorek, Marta Wieczorek•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 28

Saudade is interpreted as an ethereal concept dear to the Portuguese people. This intangible idea is often identified with a Portuguese cultural value signifying elusive states of longing, yearning, and wistfulness. This article demonstrates how the spatial realm of a former Portuguese colony, Macau, is experienced through the lens of saudade as an eluding, incorporeal, and culturally meaningful concept. The main goal of this research is to analy…

  • Macau's Heterotopias

    Marek Wieczorek•ARTICLE•Canberra Anthropology•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 8

This article explores and decodes the social experiences of the ruins of St. Paul’s in Macau. The depictions of St. Paul’s as a disruptive social space are elucidated by the concepts of heterotopia, palimpsest and liminality. As a palimpsest, Macau’s ruins comprise a variety of concealed and superimposed semantic layers. One can read the ruins and decipher these semantic tiers. The reading of buildings as palimpsests recognises the paradoxical co…

  • Flamenco

    Open Access•Marek Wieczorek, Marta Wieczorek•ARTICLE•Łódzkie Studia Etnograficzne•2018•References: 2

  • Domains of public activity in touristic flamenco shows

Open Access•Marek Wieczorek, Marta Wieczorek•ARTICLE•International Journal of Tourism…•2017

The article explores the perseverance of particular aspects of flamenco popular culture. It focuses on the touristic manifestations of the Andalusian genre and their historical reconfigurations. Particular emphasis is placed on the correlations between the era of romanticism and contemporary times. Through the analysis of flamenco evolution I aim to demonstrate how flamenco's heritage influences gender distribution in the touristic dance and song…

It analyses the impact the internal cohesion of the EP had on its bargaining strategy in informal trilogue negotiations with the Council and the Commission at first reading. The …
