Real-Time Processing of Various Conceptual Relations in Copular Sentences
We examine the processing of various conceptual relations between two nominal referents, construed as hyponymy, metonymy, metaphor, and tautology in the copular construction [NP-COP-NP], differing minimally at the predicational NP. While the four arguably share conceptual class-inclusion, they vary in combinatorial meaning transparency, informativity of the literal reading, and logical truthfulness. Metaphor recruits a cross-domain mapping betwee…
A Place-based, Just Transition framework can guide industrial decarbonisation with a social licence
A growing policy focus in many economies is decarbonising energy-intensive industries such as steel, chemicals, and cement, responsible for a quarter of global CO 2 emissions. While policy discourses underscore the need for rapid, cost-effective industrial decarbonization, how to implement decarbonization in ways that are fair and just to workers and local communities and build a social licence to operate remains unclear. This perspective address…
Imagining and emplacing net zero industrial clusters
Decarbonizing industrial sectors is a critical global challenge, involving the creation of new industrial spaces—‘net zero industrial clusters’—co‐locating energy sectors and ‘hard‐to‐abate’ industries such as oil refining and steelmaking. This paper provides the first empirically grounded geographical investigation of these emerging spaces. It employs a place‐based research agenda to unpack how UK net zero industrial clusters (ICs) are imagined …
Impact of social cognitive propensity on the processing of nontransparent sentential meaning
Metaphor in Hakka proverbs
This paper investigates metaphor in Hakka proverbs by examining a corpus of 933 couplets based on a refined analytic framework from Lakoff & Turner (1989) . For the source domain, the being of the state of affairs and the rhetorical relations of the two chunks are identified. For the target domain, the projected theme and the connotative tendency are examined. The results show that source domains significantly correlate with the rhetorical relati…
Playful Metaphors in Sex Jokes and Socio-Cultural Implications
This study investigated the interconnected relationship between playful metaphors and sex jokes at the linguistic, conceptual, and discourse levels. Two ontological conceptual metaphors and two specific-level metaphors emerged. They demonstrated that variations in the form of empty metaphors and the creative invention of metaphors are still fundamentally iconic. The conceptual representation of sex acts is closely related to the cultural and ethn…
Collocation analysis of news discourse and its ideological implications
This study investigates the use of an ethnic term in news discourse from linguistic, discursive, and social-cultural aspects. A more rigorous computational procedure than hitherto used is employed to measure the collocational strength of collocates in news corpora. The results indicate diversified distributions of the collocates regarding their frequency, distance, and semantic connections. The findings enhance the meaning specificity of the term…
Understanding ethnic visibility through language use
This study investigates how the ethnic visibility of Taiwan Hakka is improved through language use. The usage of a unique Hakka symbolic code is focused on. Based on data from the four Taiwan major newspapers, an analysis with text techniques shows that the code emerges along with social-political developments in Taiwan, with its meaning turning from negative to positive connotation. Its frequency is highly correlated with major political events …
The influence of cultural universality and specificity on EFL learners' comprehension of metaphor and metonymy
EFL learners may face different degrees of difficulty in transferring figurative expressions between L 1 and L 2 due to cultural similarities and differences embedded in languages. This study explores the influence of universality and specificity of culture on EFL learners' comprehension of metaphor and metonymy. Twenty eight T aiwanese EFL learners were asked to translate 12 E nglish sentences into C hinese. Findings indicate that the participan…
EFL learners’ awareness of metonymy–metaphor continuum in figurative expressions
Most studies about figurative language learning focus on metaphor rather than metonymy; however, the interactions of metonymy and metaphor are so intricate that the boundary forms not a dichotomy but a continuum. Such a continuum and its influences on figurative language learning have not been studied in depth. The present study investigates EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners’ responses to different metonymic and metaphoric expressions.…
Understanding and classifying two-part allegorical sayings
Rejected expectations
This article investigates the four uses of the particles cai and jiu in Mandarin Chinese: the temporal, restrictive, conditional, and emphatic uses. The major claim is that the various uses of the particles are related by virtue of their common link to an abstract semantic structure. The analysis not only accounts for the semantic similarities of the different uses but also suggests that it is just the scales on which cai and jiu operate that res…
