  • Karen Education and Boundary-Making at the Thai-Burmese Borderland

    Su-Ann Oh, Su‐ann Oh et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Borderlands Studies•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 16

This article argues that schooling and education are boundary-making devices in the volatile borderland straddling Burma and Thailand. We show that the development of Karen education was one of the ways in which the Karen National Union (KNU) erected ideological, symbolic and cultural boundaries to keep this borderland separate from the Burmese and Thai states. The political, social and economic context that circumscribes refugees' lives in T hailand has created the need for research that serves the programmatic demands of nongovernmental organisations and multilateral organisations providing services to children in camps along the border. Thus, research has focused on health indicators and schooling, rather than children's everyday lives. As a result, there are few studies that document their lives as …

This article provides an account of internal displacement and forced migration from the viewpoint of children living in a refugee camp in Thailand. Using photographs they created and narratives they related, the children represented concepts of structural violence, poverty, food security, school, peer relationships and play and articulated how these were woven into their lived experience. The study reveals how the children constantly make sense o…
