  • Diverse Attitudes of French Pacifists and Socialists Towards the ‘Yellow Peril’ in the Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries

    Open Access•Jong-Pil Yoon, Jong–pil Yoon•ARTICLE•European History Quarterly•2024

This essay examines the various ways in which pacificists and socialists in France responded to the ‘yellow peril’ from the beginning of the Sino-Japanese War (1894–1895) to the end of the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905). I identify and examine four different attitudes they developed towards the ‘yellow peril’. On the one hand, some pacificists and socialists perceived it as a reality and used it as a means of exposing the problems of expansionism…

  • Moral judgment in history education and historical positionality as a moral evaluator

    Jong-Pil Yoon, Jong–pil Yoon•ARTICLE•Theory & Research in Social…•2022•References: 60

This article presents a critical analysis of moral judgment in history education using the case of Cecil Rhodes as an example. For this purpose, I first examine the arguments for and against passing judgment on past actions given by historians, historical philosophers, and history education researchers. Second, I take a close look at the ways students approach moral issues in history and identify the shortcomings in these approaches. Then, I prop…

  • Is historical thinking unnatural

    Jong-Pil Yoon, Jong–pil Yoon•ARTICLE•Educational Philosophy and Theory•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 9

This essay critically examines the so-called ‘unnaturalness’ of historical thinking. I identify and analyse three lines of argument frequently invoked by historians to defend the validity of historical inquiry in response to scepticism, which is often couched in postmodern terms. In doing so, I highlight that these lines of argument are predicated upon historians’ thought processes and concepts being domain general. This idea of historical thinki…

  • A Picture of a Cat against Cholera? Rationality in History as Seen from a Universalist Perspective

    Jong-Pil Yoon, Jong–pil Yoon•ARTICLE•Social Epistemology•2020

This essay has two purposes. One is to present a detailed analysis of a historical example to defend the validity of the idea of universal rationality. Although diverse arguments have been offered by philosophers in support of the universal character of rationality, there are only a few in-depth discussions of concrete historical examples. So, the historical analysis presented here will supplement the existing theoretical arguments for universal …

  • Establishing expansion as a legal right: An analysis of French colonial discourse surrounding protectorate treaties

    Jong-Pil Yoon, Jong–pil Yoon•ARTICLE•History of European Ideas•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 15

This essay analyses French literature on protectorates that was published in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Firstly, I examine French understanding of protectorates with a focus on contrasting views about whether or not a protectorate treaty warrants the intervention of the protector in the internal affairs of the protected. In doing so, I attempt to delineate specific ways legal scholarship engaged with the ideological constr…

  • Recent history wars in South Korea

    Jong-Pil Yoon, Jong–pil Yoon•ARTICLE•Paedagogica Historica•2019

This article aims to offer both an overview of the key issues and controversial policy decisions that defined history education in Korea for the past 10 years and a critical analysis of the actions taken by, and claims exchanged between, the advocates of New Right thinking and their opponents during this period. In doing so, it will point out the following three things. First, there has been a great deal of partisan political interference, more o…

  • Reconfiguring Orientalism: Japan and Korea as Depicted by Early Twentieth-Century French Orientalist Literature

    Jong-Pil Yoon, Jong–pil Yoon•ARTICLE•Interventions•2017

This essay investigates the nature of western knowledge of Japan and Korea by examining French Orientalist literature in the early twentieth century. The point of departure is the idea that as Japan and Korea cannot be lumped together under an umbrella term such as “the Orient”, the diverse attitudes Europeans exhibited towards them cannot be uniformly branded with Eurocentrism founded upon the East–West dichotomy. The process in which westerners…

  • A Japanese Egypt: Korea as Depicted by Early Twentieth-Century British Newspapers

    Open Access•Jong–pil Yoon, JONG-PIL YOON JONG-PIL YOON•ARTICLE•Acta Koreana•2016

This article investigates what kind of otherness the British projected onto Korea in the 1900s through a close examination of newspaper articles. The point of departure of this work is the idea that Westerners’ conception of the Orient in this period was not monolithic but hierarchically structured. What this article attempts is thus to reveal the distinct position Korea occupied within the assumed Orient, a position different from, and assigned …

  • Contextualizing Maurice Courant, Pioneer of Korean Studies in Europe

    Jong-Pil Yoon, Jong–pil Yoon•ARTICLE•The journal of Korean studies•2016

The main purpose of this article is to identify the role Courant played in early European understanding of Korea by examining his writings of Korea-Japan relations and locating them in the intellectual context in which they were produced. The main body of this article has been divided into three separate parts. The first examines Courant’s writings of ancient Korea-Japan relations focusing on the theory of Mimana that Japan ruled southern Korea r…

  • Was Emily Brown American Empress in Korea

    Jong–pil Yoon•ARTICLE•Journal of the Philosophy of…•2016

This paper investigates the limits and meaning of historical inquiry in light of inferential contextualism that holds as its central tenet that the epistemic status of a proposition depends on the context of the subject. Historical inquiry, the discussion will show, is an epistemic practice that operates under the reliabilist presupposition that beliefs formed through the processes, whose pragmatic utility has been already proven in problem solvi…
