A Short History of Quebec
In a new chapter on contemporary Quebec, the book examines the 1995 referendum, discusses the ideological shifts and societal changes in Quebec under the Bouchard government, and considers Quebec's place in North America in the wake of NAFTA. A Short History of Quebec offers a concise yet comprehensive overview of the province from the pre-contact native period to the death of Pierre Trudeau in 2001. A case-control study of the effect of environmental sanitation on diarrhoea morbidity in Malawi
A case-control design has been applied in the evaluation of improved environmental sanitation on diarrhoeal diseases in rural Malawi. The study demonstrates the feasibility of using such an approach to evaluate two levels of water supply and sanitation service quickly and at moderate cost. Sample sizes would need to be increased substantially to evaluate multiple levels of service or to investigate interactions between water supply and sanitation…

In Its Corporate Capacity: The Seminary of Montreal as a Business Institution, 1816-1876
Since the 1660s, the Seminary of Montreal -- a French, male religious community -- had been an integral part of the merchant, seigneurial, and clerical elite that dominated Montreal. Its significance in pre-industrial society was strengthened by its role as seigneur of Montreal Island and titular parish priest. The Seminary survived the British conquest, but came under increasing attack in the early nineteenth century from industrial producers an…
George-Etienne Cartier: Montreal Bourgeois
Through the use of new sources, this study gives prominence to Cartier's business, social, and family milieu. It examines his emergence as a corporation lawyer, company director, landlord, and railway promoter as well as his political battles with his in-laws, his disintegrating marriage, and his long liaison with the unorthodox Luce Cuvillier. A rebel and political exile in 1837, Cartier by the 1850s was a member of the militia, a government min…

Promoters and Politicians: The North-Shore Railways in the History of Quebec 1854-85
The history of the north-shore railways provides a case study in the complexities of industrial development in nineteenth-century Quebec. Constructed in the fifteen years following Confederation, the North Shore and the Montreal Colonization Railways reinforced Quebec's integration into a transcontinental unit. Yet bankruptcy of both companies in 1875 forced the provincial government to assume ownership of the railways and to shoulder a financial…
