    This paper explores the reasons for the immense popularity of L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables in Japan. It concludes that Japanese women are attracted to Anne of Green Gables because the novel has a universal appeal for young women; the situation in Japan at the end of the Second World War, when Anne was translated into Japanese, was particularly propitious for such a cheerful, optimistic book; there are many similarities between Japanese …
