Evangelising the Nation: Religion and the Formation of Naga Political Identity
Northeast India has witnessed several nationality movements during the 20th century. The oldest and one of the most formidable has been that of the Nagas — inhabiting the hill tracts between the Brahmaputra river in India and the Chindwin river in Burma (now Myanmar). Rallying behind the slogan, 'Nagaland for Christ', this movement has been the site of an ambiguous relation between a particular understanding of Christianity and nation-making. Thi…
Foresight, Unpredictability & Chance in Chemistry & Cognate Subjects
In numerous branches of natural philosophy, the ways in which major, transformative advances are achieved are often cloaked in mystery, or arrived at through a fortunate concatenation of circumstances. This theme is pursued here with the aid of some examples from my own work on catalysis (the speeding up of the attainment of chemical equilibria), as well as from the work of others. Sir Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford and the Royal Institution
On 19 September 1798, there arrived in London from Munich a 45-year-old, tall, blueeyed, handsome, American-born, opportunistic man of action. A former soldier and statesman, he was, by all accounts, ruthless and arrogant, callously cunning and devious, an unprincipled spy and a calculating womanizer; but he was also a philanthropist, a brilliantly effective social reformer, an ingenious inventor and an exceptionally innovative scientist. His nam…
Reminiscences and discoveries: Bragg reflections
The thrill of understanding is second only to that of original discovery: it stimulates and sustains the student, just as it inspires and propels the teacher. Our pleasure is intensified when one recognizes that certain concepts, and the equations that they engender, have hidden depths and far-reaching repercussions, which may be conveyed to those who least suspect that they can understand them. Thoughts of this kind spring to mind whenever I con…
