Symbolics and Symbolic Change
Proceedings of the Ninth Annual Meeting of the Berkeley Linguistics Society (1983), pp. 96-103
Set theory as a meta‐language for natural languages
The purpose of this paper is twofold: (1) to show how set theory can be used as a crude but homogeneous meta‐language to describe sound‐meaning relationship in natural language, and (2) to argue in favor of applying artificial languages to study natural language until an ideal homogeneous meta‐language becomes available
Logical, syntactic, and morphological notions of subject
Synchronic syntax in historical perspective
Noun-modifier order as a consequence of VSO order
On the unreality of some phonological rules
Time as a cause of phonological irregularities
The time variable in phonological change
One of the perennial problems in diachronic linguistics is how to reconcile, on the one hand, the Neogrammarian postulate of sound laws operating without exception, and, on the other hand, the embarrassingly numerous irregularities we observe in many languages. On most occasions linguists have attempted to solve the problem by positing interdialectal borrowing or analogical levelling and have largely overlooked the possibility of the gradual diff…
