On the rescuing of some -indefinites
The experimentally backed and hitherto overlooked empirical observation of the paper is a contrast among indefinite Positive Polarity Items regarding their possibility of being rescued under certain operators with different rescuing potential. If / surprise / only / don’t think can rescue some -indefinites, suspending their anti-licensing (i.e., their impossibility to occur in the scope of a clausemate negation): while some -pronouns (in English …
Distributive numerals in Albanian
This paper investigates nga -marked numerals in Albanian. They qualify as distributive numerals, since the presence of nga on the numeral yields a distributive reading of the sentences they belong to. Beyond their differences, most of the previous accounts rely on the hypothesis that distributive numerals introduce some kind of semantic feature, e.g. a covariation feature; an evaluation plurality requirement, also called a post-suppositional plur…
J’ana…
Reflexive Marking in Romance: Voice and Feature Deficiency
The various meanings of SE/SI‐marked verbs (reflexive, inchoative, middle, and passive) are described with the aim of pointing out the most prominent empirical generalizations across Romance languages. An important number of pages is devoted to the distinction between the impersonal clitic subject SE/SI (assigned nominative) found in the major Romance languages with the exception of Romanian, and the homophonous passivizing accusative SE/SI. The …

Pronominal Possessors and Feature Uniqueness
This article explains the correlation between agreeing and nonagreeing forms of pronominal possessors and their person features in Romanian and other Indo-European languages: first- and second-person pronouns agree, whereas third-person pronouns are nonagreeing forms marked with genitive case. We show that the distribution of agreeing and nonagreeing pronominal forms follows from a constraint of feature uniqueness , which prevents a pronominal ro…

Impersonal se Constructions in Romance and the Passivization of Unergatives
Romance constructions of the type SE Vunerg (e.g., si dorme) are shown to rely not only on nominative SE, as in Italian finite clauses, but also on accusative middle-passive SE. The latter analysis is needed for Romanian, because this language does not have nominative SE, as well as for Italian nonfinite clauses, in which nominative SE is illegitimate. According to my restatement of Cinque's (1988) generalizations, [+/−1arg] features are not need…

Le sujet de l'impératif
CARMEN DOBROVIE-SORIN: The subject of the imperative. This paper considers the status of the empty subject noun phrase of the imperative in French and in Rumanian. For Rumanian the analysis draws a parallei between the cases of lexical nouns that occur in the vocative case (to the right of the verb) and the cases with a surface subject. It is shown that in Rumanian the subject of the imperative is of the same type as the subject of other inflecte…
