  • Nominal Gender in Coptic Egyptian

Sabrina Bendjaballah, Chris H Reintges et al.•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Ägyptische…•2021

The interdisciplinary research (philology, typology, morphology, phonology) presented here explores the role of gender in the meaning and morphology of Coptic nouns. Coptic has a predominantly grammatical gender system, albeit with a niche for semantically based gender assignment. The gender system marks a three-way semantic contrast between a [male] versus a [female] versus an [unspecified] gender value, even where the morphology draws only a tw…

  • High analyticity and Coptic particle syntax

    Chris H Reintges, Chris Reintges•ARTICLE•The Linguistic Review•2011

Coptic (Ancient Egyptian, 3 rd to 12 th c. CE) is a language of the isolating/analytic type, with an almost one-to-one correspondence between functional morphemes and words. The present study aims at an exhaustive description and analysis of the language's large and diversified inventory of particle words. Functional or grammatical particles encode code tense, aspect, mood categories on the one hand and register wh-dependencies in a broad range o…

  • Coordination, converbs and clause chaining in Coptic Egyptian typology and structural analysis

Chris H Reintges, Chris Reintges•CHAPTER•Clause linking and clause hierarchy•2010

Coptic Egyptian (3rd–13th c. CE) possesses a large variety of coordinating constructions. The most central pattern for symmetric clause linkage involves the coordinating conjunction awɔː ‘and’. Symmetric awɔː -coordinations at different levels (phrasal, clausal, discourse paragraph) differ systematically in meaning. In the domain of asymmetric clause coordination the language employs special verb conjugations. The focus of this study is on conver…

  • Pyr. 426 a Revisited
