  • Origines et étapes de la diversité des techniques sidérurgiques en Afrique de l’Ouest

    Open Access•Caroline Robion‐brunner, Marie‐pierre Coustures et al.•ARTICLE•Afriques•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 12

  • Investigating the provenance of iron bars from Les Saintes‐Maries‐de‐la‐Mer Roman shipwrecks (south‐east France) with iron isotopes

    Open Access•Jean Milot, Marie‐pierre Coustures et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2022•References: 76

Fe isotopes were used to determine the origin of iron bars from Les Saintes‐Maries‐de‐la‐Mer Roman shipwrecks, which was a major archaeological finding at the end of the 20th century in France. Their Fe isotope composition was measured by multi collector‐inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry (MC‐ICP‐MS) after chemical Fe purification. The results allowed us to suggest provenances that were compared with those based on trace element analyse…

  • Iron isotopes as a potential tool for ancient iron metals tracing

Open Access•Jean Milot, Franck Poitrasson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2016•Cited by: 10•References: 3

  • Iron Production in Northern Benin

Caroline Robion‐brunner, Anne Haour et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Archaeology•2015

In the context of the “Crossroads of Empires” project led by Anne Haour, one strand of enquiry aims to understand the history of blacksmith groups and the development of iron production in Dendi country, in the northern Republic of Benin. Numerous remains of iron production have been discovered, showing a great variability in furnace design and waste assemblages. At least three smelting traditions can be distinguished. In this paper, we present t…

  • Archéométrie qui trouve, archéométrie qui prouve

    Open Access•Marie-Pierre Coustures, Marie‐pierre Coustures•ARTICLE•Pallas•2013•References: 18

In the seventies was beginning the first important archaeological researches on the ancient iron metallurgy of La Montagne Noire. A few years after, archaeometry joined the research team and never left it. Now it is time to take stock of several decades of works, it seems necessary to initiate a reflection on archaeometry as disciplinary field, through its failures and successes, and to show how it contributed, in the end, to change the historica…

  • Lingots de plomb et barres de fer des épaves romaines des Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer (Bouches-du-Rhône, France)

Sandrine Baron, Marie-Pierre Coustures et al.•ARTICLE•Revue archéologique de Narbonnaise•2011

Ferrous and non-ferrous metal provenance studies are always handled in disconnected ways. In spite of two clearly different metallurgies, there are nevertheless some methodological and analytical similarities. It is precisely through the study of two types of metallic materials, lead and iron produced and commercialized during Antiquity, that certain aspects of the tracing will be discussed and compared between ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Thr…

  • The Use of Trace Element Analysis of Entrapped Slag Inclusions to Establish Ore – Bar Iron Links

    Open Access•Marie‐pierre Coustures, M P Coustures et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2003•Cited by: 15•References: 8

Knowledge of the iron trade in ancient times rests on determining the source of the objects recovered during archaeological excavations. Unfortunately, attributing the origin is not always possible using archaeological tools alone. Trace element data of the ore and the archaeological material (reduction and reheating slags, entrapped slag inclusions from the bloom, bar iron and iron blades) from two Gallo‐Roman iron‐making centres, Les Martys (Mo…
