Psychoanalytic Training
The current state psychoanalytic training is marked by excessive diversity, with different approaches and practices often opposed. Huge theoretical differences find common ground under the umbrella of pluralism, creating serious challenges and impediments for educators, supervisors and mentors, affecting the training enterprise and reshaping the future of psychoanalysis. Rather than joining the controversies and arguing what is right or wrong, th…

Psychoanalytic training—who is afraid of evaluation
Many aspects of the institutional life and organizational functioning of psychoanalysis deal with and are affected by evaluation. This paper focuses on one manifestation of this difficulty, namely the evaluation of candidates in psychoanalytic training. Opinions vary regarding its place, necessity, and contribution. Although it is at least nominally practiced in many institutes, it is nonetheless fraught with difficulty. We explore some of the so…
Being in Berlin
In July 2007, the International Psychoanalytic Congress convened for the first time since the war in the former Nazi capital, Berlin. An open large group forum was held at this meeting, where attendees (Jewish, German and others) had the opportunity to explore the emotional aspects stirred up by being in Berlin. Hundreds of people participated in the event and described it as the 'heart of the Congress'. We examine several aspects of the event, i…
Experience‐What is it
The author takes a renewed look at the constitutive aspects of experience, looking at it as process rather than contents. Recently more psychoanalytic voices are discernible that argue for the complexity and multi-leveled nature of inner experience. Yet the predominant and preeminent psychoanalytic voice has traditionally emphasized the linearity and single-factored nature of experience and all that is based on it: development, object relations, …

Working at the frontier and the use of the analyst
Certain connotations of 'working at the frontier' for the practicing psychoanalyst and for psychoanalysis are discussed in terms of movement along spatial and temporal dimensions. I then selectively highlight three currently significant frontier areas: moving between psychoanalysis and psychotherapy; psychoanalysis under conditions of terror and social traumatization; and the pursuit of the definitive as against the elusive subject. I suggest 'th…
The Psychoanalytic Method and Its Borders
Ego and Self in the Group
The psychodynamic concepts of ego and Self are interwoven with group phenomena in a number of ways. Even though ego/Self are at an opposite pole to group, they are also what makes up the group, and are in need of the group for attaining their fullest state. The group may also be viewed as having the character and quality of an ego/Self, albeit at a new level of conceptualization, as an entity in its own right. Understanding ego and Self as repres…
Identification patterns of offspring of Holocaust survivors with their parents
The patterns of identification with their parents of a sample of children of Holocaust survivors showed clear differences from those of a control group. As the clinical literature would indicate, these differences suggest a specific character organization rather than psychopathology. An explanation for the lack of agreement on this issue in the empirical literature is proposed and explored
