  • Prognostic Modeling and Major Dataset Shifts During the Covid-19 Pandemic

    Open Access•William A Knaus•ARTICLE•JAMA Health Forum•2022

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was clear that existing recommendations for allocating scarce resources in large disasters were ill-suited for a worldwide respiratory-based pandemic. 1 Yet, more than 2 years and 100 published models later, no consensus has emerged on a modeling approach to determine SARS-CoV-2 mortality risk or progression to severe disease. The methodologic shortfalls of these efforts have been well described, 2 bu…

  • Apache Ii

William A Knaus, Elizabeth A Draper et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Care Medicine•1985

This paper presents the form and validation results of APACHE II, a severity of disease classification system. APACHE II uses a point score based upon initial values of 12 routine physiologic measurements, age, and previous health status to provide a general measure of severity of disease. An increasing score (range 0 to 71) was closely correlated with the subsequent risk of hospital death for 5815 intensive care admissions from 13 hospitals. Thi…

  • Identification of Low-Risk Monitor Patients Within a Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit

    Douglas P Wagner, William A Knaus et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1983

We studied the hospital course of 1148 consecutive intensive care unit (ICU) admissions to test the feasibility of identifying patients suitable for early transfer. Based on the type of treatment each admission received during the initial 16 hours in ICU, we divided the patients into active treatment or monitored categories. Which of the 513 monitored admissions received active treatment before discharge was analyzed with a multivariate logistic …
