Insook Han Park, Lee-Jay Cho et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Comparative Family…•1995•Cited by: 46

This paper examines Korea's contemporary family system and demography in the context of the Confucian tradition and recent socioeconomic changes mediated by Western Influence. • Reconstruction of Birth Histories from Census and Household Survey Data

    Norman Y Luther, Lee-Jay Cho et al.•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1988•Cited by: 8

In this paper a new procedure for reconstructing birth histories from census or household survey data is developed. Given the number of children ever born, the number of deceased children, and the ‘own children’ birth history of each woman, it is possible to ‘fill in’ probabilistically the missing births of her deceased children and of children not present in the household. Thus, the procedure generates complete birth histories from which such me…

  • The Own-Children Method of Fertility Estimation

Geoffrey Mcnicoll, Lee‐jay Cho et al.•REVIEW•Population and Development Review•1987

It is now more than 2 decades since the own-children method of fertility estimation was 1st developed and applied to census data to obtain estimates of differential fertility for the US. The own-children method has become a standard tool in the demographers repertoire of indirect fertility estimation technics; the method has been applied most extensively in Asia Latin America and the US. The own-children method of fertility estimation is a revers…

  • Census-derived estimates of fertility by duration since first marriage in the Republic of Korea

    Open Access•Robert D Retherford, Lee-Jay Cho et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•1984•Cited by: 4

This paper estimates ever-married birth rates by age and duration since first marriage and ever-married total fertility rates for the Republic of Korea, derived by applying an extension of the own-children method of fertility estimation to the 1975 and 1980 censuses. Since each census provides annual estimates for the 15-year period previous to enumeration, there is a ten-year period of overlapping estimates that facilitates checks for consistenc…

  • Population Growth of Indonesia

    G Mcn, Lee-Jay Cho et al.•ARTICLE•Population and Development Review•1980

Analyzes data on fertility and mortality by province for all Indonesia and by regency and municipality for fertility in Java. Data are derived from the 1971 census and refer to the decade 1961-70. The completeness and accuracy of the 1971 census are assessed after which historical trends and differentials in mortality and fertility are discussed. A closer focus on fertility in densely populated Bali and Java considers provincial and regional fert…

  • Age-parity-specific birth rates and birth probabilities from census or survey data on own children

    Robert D Retherford, Lee-Jay Cho et al.•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1978•Cited by: 7•References: 4

The ‘own-children’ method is a census- or survey-based reverse-survival technique for estimating age-specific birth rates for years previous to enumeration. In this paper it is extended to estimate birth rates and birth probabilities by parity as well as by age. The refined method is tested for accuracy by comparing ‘own-children’ estimates of age-parity-specific birth probabilities for the United States in 1969 with parallel estimates obtained b…

  • Income and differentials in current fertility

    Open Access•Lee-Jay Cho, Lee‐jay Cho•ARTICLE•Demography•1968
