“You Could Go Through All of This for Nothing”
Sexual violence among college students is an urgent problem that has devastating impacts on student-survivors over the course of their university experience. Yet, there is conflicting evidence that university policies under Title IX achieve their intended objective to assist universities in effectively responding to students who experience sexual violence. Analyses of in-depth interviews with 11 student-survivors reveal the challenges of putting …
Love, Loss, and Rebirth
Neoliberal tenets of career including a focus on the individual, self‐sufficiency, a disembodied worker, and linear career path are suffused throughout academia. However, extant research demonstrates how this neoliberal stronghold might rest upon contested terrain, particularly as post‐pandemic workers are re‐evaluating life goals and aspirations. This study contributes to the literature on academic career transitions in a neoliberal context by e…
Transcending Work–Life Tensions
Extant research has considered how professional women negotiate the contradictory demands of work and gender. However, these contradictions may be exacerbated for women from and living in the Middle East, North Africa (MENA), and India, as globalization has circulated Western discourses of gender equality that appear to conflict with non-Western discourses of gender difference. To better understand this potential conflict, we conducted a transnat…
Intimate, ambivalent and erotic mentoring
Mentoring centers on the development of another person through career, psychosocial and role modeling support. As popular cultural portrayals and gendered critiques of mentoring show, not all can be categorized as rational, instrumental and positive. There often are unconscious forces that drive particular mentoring arrangements and offer entrée points into mentorship analyses that contrast with rational approaches. Popular culture images provide…
Constructing a feminist organization’s identity in a competitive marketplace
Feminist organizations today must maintain their distinctive organizational identities in a competitive marketplace in which feminism has become one choice amidst many social change causes. Alignment among organizational identity, stakeholder images, and organizational culture can give feminist organizations a competitive advantage. However, feminist theory and practice have surfaced alignment challenges that can undermine organizational success.…
Transnational Feminist Advocacy Online
Transnational feminist networks (TFNs) are organizational forms that transcend geographical, political, and cultural boundaries to advance a gender justice and development agenda. TFNs form collective identities for survival, especially in the face of competing goals such as solidarity and diversity, movement building, and financial sustainability. Informed by feminist organizing theories, this study uses thematic analysis to explore how one TFN …
Selling (Out) Feminism
Feminist mainstreaming has made feminist ideology one choice among many causes in a competitive marketplace. To stay competitive, feminist organizations must manage the dual goals of advocacy and financial viability. This study explores how an independent media business that publishes a feminist popular culture magazine and sponsors community events navigates ideology–viability tensions. This analysis articulates two discursive strategies employe…
Sex, Feminism, and Advertising
Feminist media organizations must balance ideology with financial viability via advertising revenue. Yet advertising rests on the assumption that sex sells. Research considering sex appeals in women’s magazines has shown that women are often portrayed in a demeaning manner. However, research has not considered that alternative media, such as Bust magazine, may construct sex appeals differently. This textual analysis applies third wave and feminis…
The Reach of Child Abuse Potential
This paper examines the reach of child abuse potential by exploring its association with multiple features of parenting (i.e., connection, regulation, and stimulation). Twenty-four mothers with infants or toddlers from low-income families who were beginning participation in an intergenerational learning program completed the Child Abuse Potential Inventory (CAPI; Milner, 1986 Milner, J. S. 1986. The Child Abuse Potential Inventory manual, 2nd, De…
Problematizing Classed Identities in Fatherhood
This article analyzes the discourse and practices of two men from different life circumstances punctuated by race, class, education, occupation, number of children, relational history, and familial background. The authors create a new data analytic technique, the integrative case study, that juxtaposes excerpts and analyses of these fathers' interview data in imagined conversational space through poststructuralist feminist lenses. The authors for…
Feminine and Feminist Transformation in Popular Culture
Most communication research concerning women's magazines addresses the negative implications these popular culture artifacts have on women's identities in terms of constructing specific notions of femininity and appropriating feminist ideals. However, there has been little research on popular culture artifacts that explicitly contradict the messages of most contemporary women's magazines. This study applies and extends radical feminist Mary Daly'…
Stories of Caregiving
The article analyzes contemporary discourses and practices of caregiving and mothering. Using a case study of one employed mother as a starting point, the authors engage in writing-stories that combine the analyses of their e-mail and face-to-face conversations from the last couple of years with various journal entries and interdisciplinary research. The article concludes with a final section that articulates how caregiving discourses cut across …
