Taking Public Action on Private Troubles
Qualitative inquiry is well positioned to aid in public education on crucial social problems. Implementing a dual perspective engages not only quantitative approaches, but centers the critical role of qualitative inquiry in uncovering a multilayered analysis of the diversity and range of lived experience that can also contribute a rich perspective onto the wider quantitatively driven macro inquiry public landscape. The case studies presented prov…
Using a Feminist Standpoint Perspective and Praxis Lens to Challenge Neoliberalism in Eurozone Austerity Policy
The economic downturn in Eurozone countries started in late 2007, and it continues today, over a decade later. Current Eurozone economic austerity policy is a quantitatively driven “one size fits all” policy whose goals are to decrease Eurozone countries’ debt through a set of “belt-tightening” measures that amount to massive cutbacks in the service sector. Such measures have been shown to negatively impact the most vulnerable within these societ…
The Pink Underside
The growth of the Internet since the millennium has opened up a myriad of opportunities for education, particularly in medicine. Although those looking for health care information used to have to turn to a face-to-face doctor's visit, an immense library of medical advice is now available at their fingertips. The BRCA genetic predispositions (mutations of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 breast cancer genes) which expose men and women to greater risk of breast…
Gender Differences in Psychosocial and Medical Outcomes Stemming From Testing Positive for the BRCA1/2 Genetic Mutation for Breast Cancer
This quantitatively driven sequential mixed methods study articulates the role of theory in mixed methods research and assesses the contribution of a mixed methods design to examining gender differences in men and women’s genetic testing decisions and the psychosocial factors impacting health-seeking behaviors post-testing. A quantitative online survey of BRCA-positive mutation men and women was followed by a qualitative component consisting of s…

The problems and prospects in the teaching of mixed methods research
There are pedagogical challenges USA students and instructors face within mixed methods classrooms. Instructors of mixed methods are often self-taught, lacking adequate training in both qualitative and quantitative approaches to research. Students are not often trained in both research approaches. These dual training gaps can result in deep pedagogical issues compromising students’ ability to fully understand mixed methods research praxis and lea…
Racial Identity and the Development of Body Image Issues among African American Adolescent Girls
As readers, children with dyslexia are vulnerable to becoming academically, socially, and emotionally detached from education. Traditional educational practices tend to use quantitative measures to diagnose children to better serve their needs and researchers, who study students with special needs often focus on a deficit model that quantify just how far a child is from the norm. This practice, while full of good intentions, often creates emotion…
Qualitative or Mixed Methods Research Inquiry Approaches
Mixed Methods Research
Contemporary mixed methods research (MMR) veers away from a "loosely bounded" to a "bounded" concept that has important negative implications for how qualitatively driven mixed methods approaches are positioned in the field of mixed methods and overall innovation in the praxis of MMR. I deploy the concept of reification defined as taking an object/abstraction and treating it as if it were real such that it takes on the quality of "thing-ness," ha…

The Genetic Testing Experience of BRCA-Positive Women
Little is known about how the breast cancer (BRCA) gene mutation affects women's decision-making processes. I use a feminist standpoint lens to explore the process by which BRCA-positive women came to socially construct and understand their risk for developing breast and/or ovarian cancer and the treatment options they elected post-testing. This study included in-depth interviews with 64 BRCA-positive mutation women, some of whom sought surveilla…
Coming at Things Differently
The field of mixed methods (MM) research facilitates ‘‘coming at things differently.’’ Traditional forms of data gathering using one method for data collection may not be adequate for answering complex questions that sometimes require a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods in one study. Although the number of MM studies continues to grow, it is clear from the literature that newcomers and seasoned MM researchers encounter praxis/practi…

Triangulation and Mixed Methods Research
Triangulation is a measurement technique often used by surveyors to locate an object in space by relying on two known points in order to ‘‘triangulate’’ on an unknown fixed point in that same space. Early on, social scientists borrowed the concept of triangulation to argue for its use in the validation process in assessing the veracity of social science research results. There are alternative perspectives on the use of triangulation that argue fo…
Feminist Approaches to Triangulation
This article explores the deployment of triangulation in the service of uncovering subjugated knowledge and promoting social change for women and other oppressed groups. Feminist approaches to mixed methods praxis create a tight link between the research problem and the research design. An analysis of selected case studies of feminist praxis explores the specific reasons feminist researchers employ triangulation, and the strengths and weaknesses …
Internet-Mediated Technologies and Mixed Methods Research
This article provides an examination of a range of mixed methods research projects that employ Internet-mediated technologies (IMT) for data collection. Using a case study approach, this article allows for the uncovering of a process by which IMT are used as a data collection medium in mixed methods praxis. Under the theoretical position of medium theory, the impact of how going online and changing the “mode” of traditional research will be explo…
Weaving a Multimethodology and Mixed Methods Praxis Into Randomized Control Trials to Enhance Credibility
Most disciplines within the health and social sciences regard randomized control trials (RCTs) as the "gold standard" of evidence-based practice (EBP). The move toward mixed methods within evidence-based research has proven daunting to many researchers, and few best practices for RCT mixed methods studies currently exist. This article provides some strategies for incorporating mixed methods into RCT designs. Furthermore, the author argues for the…

Qualitative Approaches to Mixed Methods Practice
This article discusses how methodological practices can shape and limit how mixed methods is practiced and makes visible the current methodological assumptions embedded in mixed methods practice that can shut down a range of social inquiry. The article argues that there is a "methodological orthodoxy" in how mixed methods is practiced that currently favors quantitative methodologies, with a mixed methods praxis that positions qualitative methods …
Emerging Methodologies and Methods Practices in the Field of Mixed Methods Research
This special issue marks a reflective turning point in thinking about the theory and practice of mixed methods research. As a field of study, mixed methods practice is both “old” and “emergent.” It is old in that the field of mixed methods has an historical legacy of practice that has remained invisible. Early on, social science research practice employed mixed methods data. Hesse-Biber (2010) notes,Mixed methods research developed with the earli…

The second edition of Working Women in America: Split Dreams highlights current research on critical issues affecting American women in today's global workplace. It features updated information and examples, including extended discussions of women's activism within and outside of the workplace, the impact of globalization, the effects of the glass ceiling and sexual harassment, and women's roles in the U.S. labor movement. Retaining the focus of …
A Longitudinal Study of Eating Disorders Among College Women
This study provides insight into factors that determine whether women in the college population who exhibit eating-disordered behavior during their college years recover during their postcollege years. The study assessed changes in the eating patterns of 21 women across a six-year time period, from sophomore year in college to two years postcollege. Eleven of the women get better during their postcollege year, whereas 10 of the women continue to …

Closing the Technological Gender Gap
Feminist Audre Lorde states, The master's tools will never dismantle the master's house. In this paper, however, we encourage women to seize computer toolsfor their own educational purposes in order to counteract the null they experience in the traditional classroom. The Political Influence of Older Americans
This essay explores the future prospects for the political influence of older Americans. Some analysts contend that the next fifty years will bring a marked increase in the political influence of the elderly. Others argue that the aged are unlikely to become a significant political influence at any time in the forseeable future. We review the relevant evidence and conclude that it is not entirely consistent with either of these positions. Our ana…

Male and Female Students' Perceptions of Their Academic Environment and Future Career Plans
A total of 298 male and 634 female students completed a study questionnaire in 1981. Some important gender differences were found regarding students' career goals and their perceptions of the academic environment. Female respondents selected careers traditionally defined as acceptable for women and expressed less confidence that they would be successful in their work. Students' work and life style goals were shaped primarily by family and peers. …

Report on a panel longitudinal study of college women's eating patterns and eating disorders
The self-reported frequencies (prevalence and incidence) of eating patterns and disorders in a matched longitudinal sample of college women (N = 141) interviewed during their sophomore year (Time 1) and senior year (Time 2) were compared. The rate of eating disorders was assessed using a noncontinuum measure, the Eating Attitudes Test (Garner, Olmsted, Bohr, & Garfinkel, 1982), as well as continuum measures based on criteria in the third edition …

Am I Thin Enough Yet?
In The Cult of Thinness, Sharlene Hesse-Biber builds on interviews with young women about their weight and body image and connects women’s eating patterns to images in popular culture. Linking eating disorders to contemporary social, cultural, and economic pressures on women to be thin, Hesse-Biber argues that diet and workout industries profit from this cult of thinness and help to perpetuate it.
