Translating relational theories into dementia care using research-informed drama
Culture change initiatives in older adult and dementia care have called for a new care paradigm informed by a relational ontology and relational theories. Yet translating these humanizing principles into practice has proven difficult; traditional approaches to knowledge translation have not had a sustained impact. One of the most significant impediments to transforming the culture of care has been the lack of understanding of what it means to be …
Disrupting dehumanising and intersecting patterns of modernity with a relational ethic of caring
Background: This article describes two dehumanising patterns associated with modern culture and their consequences of stigma and suffering for persons living with dementia: the increasing division, judgment and exclusion of persons based on difference, disability, and undesirability; and the increasing attention to management and control, and their links with ageism, healthism and consumerism. These patterns have been established in media, polici…

Research-based drama is an effective public health strategy for reducing stigma and enhancing well-being. In this article we focus on survey d…
Always With Me
An arts-based qualitative method was used to explore the experiences of children's bereavement after a baby sibling's death, in the context of their family and school life. Data were collected during in-depth interviews with 9 bereaved children and 5 parents from 4 Canadian families and analyzed. A central process, evolving sibling relationship over the years, and a pattern of vulnerability/resilience, ran through all four themes, which reflected…
Nurses' Experiences of Grieving When There Is a Perinatal Death
Many nurses grieve when patients die; however, nurses' grief is not often acknowledged or discussed. Also, little attention is given to preparing nurses for this experience in schools of nursing and in orientations to health care organizations. The purpose of this research was to explore obstetrical and neonatal nurses' experiences of grieving when caring for families who experience loss after perinatal death. A visual arts-informed research meth…

The research drama was created to help diminish the unnecessary suffering that accompanies the misunderstanding and judgment of persons living with dementia. This article describes the immediate experience of seeing, hearing, and feeling research findings that have been transformed through dra…
