  • The church and the temple

    Open Access•Gavina Córdova•ARTICLE•Religion•2026•Cited by: 1•References: 34

In this article I draw on ethnographic research among Sri Lankans in the southern Italian region of Sicily. There, a conspicuous Sinhala community (mostly Catholics) has established itself since the Eighties. Focusing particularly on Sinhala Catholics living in Messina, I un-pack the entanglements of heritage and religion in two interconnected case-studies. On the one hand, I discuss the complex and multifaceted relations between Sinhala Catholic…

  • In His image

    Gavina Córdova•ARTICLE•New Community•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 22

In this article, I examine the fluctuations of the moral connotations attributed to migrants’ subjectivity in the Sicilian city of Messina (Southern Italy), where the Catholic Church represents an active and powerful institution grappling with Catholic-faith migrant groups – particularly Sri Lankans, who constitute a significant non-EU foreign group in the region. If Sri Lankans living in Messina (the majority of whom are Catholic and Sinhalese) …

  • I santi degli altri. Devozione, mutamento e rituali tra i singalesi cattolici a Messina

    Open Access•Gavina Córdova•ARTICLE•Archivio antropologico mediterraneo•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 7

  • Waiting for Utopia

    Open Access•Gavina Córdova•ARTICLE•Religion and Society•2022

In this article I consider the connection between Islam and utopia, using the renewed visibility that Islamic actors and moral economies have gained in the post-revolutionary Tunisian public sphere as a starting point. In particular, based on ethnographic findings from field research in Tunisia, I take into account the interest in Salafism expressed by young Muslims, recently fascinated by the Salafi tradition even if not necessarily joining any …

  • Jeunes tunisiens et processus de subjectivation politique

    Open Access•Gavina Córdova, Giovanni Cordova•ARTICLE•Insaniyat /

  • Challenging hegemony, imaging alternatives. Everyday youth discourses and practices of resistance in contemporary Tunisia

    Gavina Córdova•ARTICLE•The Journal of North African…•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 14

Recent Maghreb conflicts and social transformation have shown the existence of disputes and complex negotiations over the moral economies that, in the national public consciousness, mobilise common adherence to norms and values. In this paper, I will consider the urban context of Tunis. Through an ethnography conducted among young Tunisians of middle and working classes (most of them having interrupted their advanced studies) I propose to find th…

  • Decir y Callar

    Open Access•Virginia Zavala, Gavina Córdova•BOOK•Decir y callar•2010•Cited by: 4
