  • Early Marriage, Preterm Birth, and School Dropout

Open Access•J Wells, Jonathan C Wells et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2025

Background Across generations, girls' early marriage recurs in high‐risk groups; however there is poor understanding of how behavior and biology interact in this context. We hypothesized an intergenerational cycle of risk, linking early marriage, preterm birth, and school dropout, and evaluated evidence for specific components of this cycle in low‐/middle‐income countries. Methods We conducted a systematized review, searching articles published f…

  • Changing sex differences in undernutrition of African children

Open Access•Michel Garenne, Susan Thurstans et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2022

The study investigates sex differences in the prevalence of undernutrition in sub-Saharan Africa. Undernutrition was defined by Z -scores using the CDC-2000 growth charts. Some 128 Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) were analysed, totalling 700,114 children under-five. The results revealed a higher susceptibility of boys to undernutrition. Male-to-female ratios of prevalence averaged 1.18 for stunting (height-for-age Z -score Z -score Z -score …

    Open Access•J Wells, Jonathan C Wells et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2020

  • How Much Education Is Needed to Delay Women's Age at Marriage and First Pregnancy

Open Access•Akanksha Marphatia, N Saville et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2020

Background: Early childbirth is associated with adverse maternal and child health outcomes. In South Asia, where women generally marry before having children, public health efforts need to focus on delaying marriage. Female education is widely considered the primary means to achieve this. However, it remains unclear how much education is required to delay marriage to the universal minimum age of 18 years, or what predicts marriage age in women la…

  • ‘Severe malnutrition’

Open Access•Marko Kerac, Marie Mcgrath et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2020

box Malnutrition affects millions worldwide and underlies almost half of deaths in children aged <5 years.1 Progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 2 (End hunger) was already slow but coronavirus-related secondary impacts now threaten nutritional crises described as: Biblical, on steroids, across generations .2 Towards effective actions, effective communication matters. Malnutrition involves a plethora of complex technical terminology. Some…

  • Early development in children with moderate acute malnutrition

    Open Access•Mette Frahm Olsen, Ann‐Sophie Iuel‐Brockdorff et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2019

Malnutrition impairs cognitive, communication, and motor development, but it is not known how nutrition and health are associated with development in children with moderate acute malnutrition (MAM). We aimed to describe motor and language development of children with MAM and explore its nutrition and health-related correlates. This cross-sectional study used baseline data from a nutritional trial in children with MAM aged 6-23 months in Burkina F…

  • Brain MRI and cognitive function seven years after surviving an episode of severe acute malnutrition in a cohort of Malawian children

Open Access•Natasha Lelijveld, Alhaji Alusine Jalloh et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2019

Objective To assess differences in cognition functions and gross brain structure in children seven years after an episode of severe acute malnutrition (SAM), compared with other Malawian children. Design Prospective longitudinal cohort assessing school grade achieved and results of five computer-based (CANTAB) tests, covering three cognitive domains. A subset underwent brain MRI scans which were reviewed using a standardized checklist of gross ab…
