Evolution of Gender Patterns in Retirement Saving in Canada
Multiple Testing and the Distributional Effects of Accountability Incentives in Education
This article proposes bootstrap-based multiple testing procedures for quantile treatment effect (QTE) heterogeneity under the assumption of selection on observables, and shows its asymptotic validity. Our procedure can be used to detect the quantiles and subgroups exhibiting treatment effect heterogeneity. We apply the multiple testing procedures to data from a large-scale Pakistani school report card experiment, and uncover evidence of policy-re…
How Do Nypd Officers Respond to Terror Threats
Using data from the Stop‐and‐Frisk programme of the New York Police Department (NYPD), we evaluate the impact of a specific terrorist attack threat from Al Qaeda on policing behaviour in New York City. We find that after the Department of Homeland Security raised the alert level in response to this threat, people categorized as ‘Other’ by the NYPD, including Arabs, were significantly more likely to be frisked and have force used against them, yet…
Post-Secondary Student Choices and the Labour Shortage in Canada’s Information and Communication Technology Sector
Employers in Canada’s information and communication technology (ICT) sector often claim that they face a shortage of technical talent. This shortage may arise in part from a sharp decline in undergraduate engineering and computing enrolment and graduation rates in Canada beginning in 2002. Even with a recent reversal in enrolment trends, the number of graduates in these fields remains well below the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Deve…
Box Office Buzz
Business decision makers are increasingly using predictive social media analytic tools in forecasting exercises but ignoring potential model uncertainty. Using data on the universe of Twitter messages, we calculate the sentiment regarding each film to understand whether these opinions affect box office opening and DVD retail sales. Our results contrasting eleven different econometric strategies including penalization methods indicate that account…
Biomarkers as Inputs
This chapter provides an overview of research primarily within the discipline of economics that empirically examines how biomarkers influences specific health and socioeconomic outcomes. Since the role that biomarkers are hypothesized to play in the estimating equation differs across studies, a distinction is first made between two separate categories of biomarkers: biological time-varying measures such as hormones and biological time-invariant m…
The Impact of Social Networks on Labour Market Outcomes
New Evidence on the Impacts of Access to and Attending Universal Child-Care in Canada
In Canada, advocates of universal child-care often point to policies implemented in Quebec as providing a model for early education and care policies in other provinces. While these policies have proven to be highly popular among citizens, initial evaluations of access to these programs indicated they led to a multitude of undesirable child developmental, health, and family outcomes. These research findings ignited substantial controversy and cri…
A Genetic Instrumental Variables Analysis of the Effects of Prenatal Smoking on Birth Weight
There is a large literature showing the detrimental effects of prenatal smoking on birth and childhood health outcomes. It is somewhat unclear though, whether these effects are causal or reflect other characteristics and choices by mothers who choose to smoke that may also affect child health outcomes or biased reporting of smoking. In this paper we use genetic markers that predict smoking behaviors as instruments to address the endogeneity of sm…
Estimating Treatment Effects from Contaminated Multiperiod Education Experiments
This paper introduces an empirical strategy to estimate dynamic treatment effects in randomized trials that provide treatment in multiple stages and in which various noncompliance problems arise, such as attrition and selective transitions between treatment and control groups. Our approach is applied to the highly influential four-year randomized class size study, Project STAR. We find benefits from attending small classes in all cognitive subjec…
Do Peers Affect Student Achievement in China's Secondary Schools
Peer effects have figured prominently in debates on school vouchers, desegregation, ability tracking, and antipoverty programs. Compelling evidence of their existence remains scarce for plaguing endogeneity issues such as selection bias and the reflection problem. This paper is among the first to firmly establish the link between peer performance and student achievement, using a unique data set from China. We find strong evidence that peer effect…
Bargaining in Legislatures
We investigate the differential effects of open versus closed amendment rules within the framework of a distributive model of legislative bargaining. The data show that there are longer delays in distributing benefits and a more egalitarian distribution of benefits under the open amendment rule, the proposer gets a larger share of the benefits than coalition members under both rules, and play converges toward minimal winning coalitions under the …
Life Change and Gastric Cancer
Forty colorectal cancer patients, 14 gastric cancer patients, and 10 normal controls were tested with the Social Readjustment Rating Scale. The gastric cancer patients had a significantly higher amount of life change (p less than 0.05) in the 2-year period preceding the onset of the first symptoms of their illness. Moreover, there was a significant (p less than 0.01) negative correlation between amount of life change and age at onset of symptoms …
