Virtuous Organizations in the Age of AI
The integration of AI‐based systems in everyday work has given rise to augmented organizations, transforming traditional work paradigms and prompting new research questions concerning augmented work processes and their related ethical issues. Drawing upon the practice‐institution framework proposed by Alasdair MacIntyre, integrated with Donati's concept of relational goods, this article examines whether and how augmented organizations can be virt…
Gender and Occupational Prestige. Testing the Devaluation Theory in Spain
The devaluation theory, that is, that occupations where women predominate become less socially valued than those where men are in the majority, has not reached a unanimous conclusion in the empirical literature, especially when prestige is used as an indicator of the valuation of the occupation. The changing economic and social circumstances may influence the fulfillment of this hypothesis over time. Using regression analysis, this article tests …
The impact of public policies on people’s (un)happiness
This study examines the relationship between public policies and multidimensional happiness using the Multidimensional Index of Happiness (MIH), which incorporates ethical, affective, and welfare system dimensions for a comprehensive understanding of well-being. The study focuses on the impact of public policies during the COVID-19 pandemic, an unique context posing significant challenges to well-being. During the first wave of the COVID-19 pande…
Measuring happiness for social policy evaluation
There are multiple indices based on positive psychology and the economics of happiness for measuring, evaluating and developing social policies. Based on univariable scales, they reflect a more hedonic view rather than a complex perspective on social reality and human behavior, which renders them unfit for purpose in the field of sociology. This paper proposes a multidimensional model that includes social relationships and human happiness, focusi…
The digital transformation of work
Conversation about the current and potential effects of digital technologies on the nature of work is raging within scholarly and practitioner communities. Artificial intelligence, robotics, data analytics, digital platforms, and automation, among other technologies, are prompting a swift and profound transformation of work. Building on Pierpaolo Donati's relational sociology, we examine the changes these technologies are likely to bring about in…
Income and the utilization of long-term care services
This paper estimates the impact of income on the long-term care utilization of elderly Americans using a natural experiment that led otherwise similar retirees to receive significantly different Social Security payments based on their year of birth. Using data from the 1993 and 1995 waves of the AHEAD, we estimate instrumental variables models and find that a positive permanent income shock lowers nursing home use but increases the utilization of…
