  • Fission Track Dating of Obsidian Samples from Lipari Neolithic Settlements

    Open Access•Maria Clara Martinelli, L Bonizzoni et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2025•References: 13

The present work describes the first results of the project “Lipari Obsidian and Neolithic Human Communities in the Aeolian Islands”, which aims to study the connection between obsidian sources on the island of Lipari and Neolithic populations on the Aeolian archipelago in Italy. Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass used to produce chipped tools; in the Neolithic period it was the sharpest known material and its trade played an important role in …

  • A pre-Columbian obsidian trade from secondary fluvial sources supported by new geochemical data from the Alto Coca Reserve and Sumaco sites (Napo Province, Ecuador)

Open Access•Patrizia Santi, Mark Thurber et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2022•References: 25

  • Chronological and chemical approaches to obsidians from Bakla Tepe and Liman Tepe, Western Anatolia

    Open Access•Z Yeḡingil, M Oddone et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2020•References: 11

  • Prehistorical Obsidian Sources in the Island of Lipari (Aeolian Islands)

    Open Access•Maria Clara Martinelli, M Coltelli et al.•ARTICLE•Open Archaeology•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 7

This research project concerns the study, analysis and dating of obsidian flows on the island of Lipari, in relation to the population of the Aeolian Islands, during the Neolithic period. The collection, processing and diffusion of Lipari obsidian characterise the Neolithic population of Lipari and the entire Mediterranean. By improving the knowledge of supply methods in the territory, it will be possible to formulate hypotheses on the chronology…

  • Long-distance provenance for obsidian artifacts of Mesoamerica Preclassic and Early Classic periods found in the Los Naranjos Archaeological Park (Honduras)

    Open Access•Patrizia Santi, Alberto Renzulli et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 12

  • Increasing data (Inaa) on Ecuadorian obsidian artifacts

Open Access•Patrizia Santi, Alberto Renzulli et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2010•Cited by: 5•References: 6

  • Pleistocene colonisation of the Bismarck Archipelago

    Open Access•Robin Torrence, Vince Neall et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology in Oceania/Archæology…•2004•Cited by: 33•References: 27

The geological and archaeological signatures at the site of Kupona na Dari on the Willaumez Peninsula, West New Britain provide important new data about human colonisation of the Bismarck Archipelago. Analyses of the stratigraphy and weathering of paleosols and manuports, when combined with fission track, radiocarbon, and luminescence dating, indicate that the site was first occupied at about 35–45,000 years ago. During the whole period of occupa…

  • Firing techniques of the impasti from the protohistoric site of Concordia Sagittaria (Venice)

Open Access•Mariangela Bertelle, Sandro Calogero et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2000•Cited by: 1

  • Age Determination of Obsidian Source Samples from North Queensland and New South Wales, Australia

    Open Access•R Bonetti, A Guglielmetti et al.•CHAPTER•Advances in Fission-Track…•1998

  • Discriminating Sources of Mediterranean Marbles

    Open Access•E Mello, D MONNA et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•1988•Cited by: 10•References: 11

A computer‐based pattern recognition procedure has been applied to trace element data obtained from marble samples of different Mediterranean quarries. Nineteen elements, mostly hydromagmatic and rare earth elements were first determined by neutron activation analysis. These elemental concentrations are then used as the data for further multivariate analysis. The results indicate significant differences in chemical patterns of the marble sources
