  • The Implications of Australia’s “Smart Sanctions” Against Fiji 2006 to 2014 for Geopolitical Contest in the South Pacific

  • Teaching Australian foreign policy through the lens of strategic culture

    Michael O’keefe•ARTICLE•Australian Journal Of International…•2019•Citada por: 1•Referências: 4

Australian foreign policy is often taught in a purely descriptive way or as a case study for critiquing various international relations theories. Neither approach does justice to the rich historical traditions in foreign policy making in Australia or to the trends shaping the way students are exposed to foreign policy issues in the digital age and teaching can be enhanced if these trends are engaged with. Reflection on Australia's unique strategi…

  • We invited the disease to come to us”

Open Access•Tarryn Phillips, Celia Mcmichael et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Public Health•2017

Rates of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are increasing globally, particularly amongst low- and middle-income countries. Critical public health scholars have argued that while political and socio-economic factors shape health outcomes within particular environments, neoliberal public health efforts tend to emphasise individual responsibility to avoid behavioural risks and ‘choose’ health. Yet there is little analysis of how these discourses abou…

  • Lessons from the rise and fall of the military Aids hypothesis

    Michael O''Keefe, Michael O’keefe et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Politics•2012•Citada por: 3•Referências: 27

This article traces the genus of an idea whose time has past, but provides enduring lessons for public policymaking on HIV and AIDS. The focus is on an AIDS myth that quickly became an orthodoxy, but did not stand close scrutiny and was upturned by a lack of evidence. However, its significance in reshaping international public policy has outlived its marginalisation and it stands as a study of a largely political dynamic that if repeated could be…

  • Contextualising the Aids epidemic in the South Pacific

    Michael O’keefe•ARTICLE•Australian Journal Of International…•2011•Citada por: 2•Referências: 5

There is a growing consensus that HIV/AIDS is a ‘time bomb’ ticking in the South Pacific. This may, in fact, be the case. However, there are at least two major problems with this approach. First, analysis of the implications of the epidemic is based on supposedly concrete links between the epidemic and social, economic and political outcomes. Many of these apparent links have not been established (because the data is not available for the South P…

  • Enduring Tensions in the 2000 Defence White Paper

    Open Access•Michael O’keefe, Michael O'Keefe•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Politics &…•2003

In 2000 the Howard government formed a consultative committee to review defence policy and gauge public opinion on defence issues. It concentrated on the impact of budgetary stringency and dramatic strategic change and supported increased defence spending on equipment to cater for high‐level threats. Was there a thorough review? Inconsistencies occurred in the reports developed from the review and statements made by senior policy‐makers while it …
