Surveying Social Life: Papers in Honor of Herbert H. Hyman
The discovery of pluralistic ignorance: An ironic lesson
In recent years, an increasing number of social and behavioral scientists have begun to pay serious attention to pluralistic ignorance, the shared false ideas of individuals about the sentiments, thoughts, and actions of others. Most of these researchers are unaware of the original effort to investigate these patterns of cognitive error and, consequently, misunderstand, as did the original investigators, some of the implications of their own work…
White and Black Perceptions of Racial Values
This paper examines the association between white and black racial values and the perceptions of white and black racial values. Data are presented that confirm recent findings regarding the distorted conceptions that whites have of other whites' racial preferences. The data also show that the relationship between values and perceptions accounts for patterned similarities and differences between white and black estimates of white support for segre…

Pluralistic Ignorance-A Replication and Extension
This paper presents the results of a replication and extension of a previous study showing that white Americans seriously misperceive the racial values of other whites around them. Based on a 1970 national sample survey, the new data confirm the earlier findings that whites tended to overestimate white support for racial segregation and that this tendency was related to their own racial values. The second study also shows that many whites tended …
Pluralistic Ignorance and White Estimates of White Support for Racial Segregation
This article presents data, taken from a secondary analysis of a national survey, indicating that in 1968 most white American adults grossly exaggerated the support among other whites for racial segregation. Several correlates of this pattern of pluralistic ignorance—the extent to which the respondents led segregated lives, their racial attitudes, and their racial values—are examined. Finally, the relationship between this form of pluralistic ign…
