  • Living at the Edges of Capitalism

Andrej Grubačić, Denis O’hearn et al.•BOOK•Living at the Edges of Capitalism•2016

Since the earliest development of states, groups of people escaped or were exiled. As capitalism developed, people tried to escape capitalist constraints connected with state control. This powerful book gives voice to three communities living at the edges of capitalism: Cossacks on the Don River in Russia; Zapatistas in Chiapas, Mexico; and prisoners in long-term isolation since the 1970s. Inspired by their experiences visiting Cossacks, living w…

  • Ireland in the World-System

    Open Access•Aidan Beatty, Sharae Deckard et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of World-Systems Research•2016•Cited by: 5

In this interview, Denis O’Hearn presents his views of Ireland’s historical and contemporary status in the capitalist world-system and which countries Ireland could be profitably compared with. He discusses how Ireland has changed since the publication of his well-known work on "The Atlantic Economy" (2001) and addresses questions related to the European Union and the looming break-up of Britain as well as contemporary Irish politics on both side…

    Denis O''Hearn, Denis O’hearn et al.•ARTICLE•Social Problems•2000•Cited by: 4•References: 41

The recent period of globalization has been accompanied by an increased number of regional peace processes. Sponsors of peace processes often try to attract support by promising a peace dividend to participating states and populations. This article examines the relationships between globalization, peace processes and peace dividends, especially foreign investments. It analyzes the north of Ireland and the economically marginalized area of West Be…

  • Turning Agreement to Process

    Open Access•Denis O''Hearn, Denis O’hearn et al.•ARTICLE•Capital & Class•1999

In this article we examine the northern Irish peace process and the 1998 Belfast Agreement to ask whether they provide the basis for radical change of that society. We analyse the problems of ethnic and class inequality in the north, and the associated need for the regeneration of economically marginalised areas. Two questions are examined in this regard. First, does the peace process provide a basis for the social changes that will be necessary …

  • Innovation and the World-System Hierarchy

    Denis O''Hearn, Denis O’hearn et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1994•Cited by: 3

Analyses of innovation generally assume that it is a local or national process. This article uses world-system concepts and the case of the Irish and English cotton industries to argue that innovations are not intrinsically local but must be localized. Irish and English customs data and historical analysis are used to demonstrate how the localization of innovation around Manchester involved the peripheralization of the Irish industry by Britain. …

    Denis O''Hearn, Denis O’hearn et al.•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1989•Cited by: 24•References: 4

The dependency approach has recently been criticized by authors who quote the exceptional East Asian cases The Irish case is used to refute these new modernizationist arguments on two counts. (1) Countries such as Ireland, not the East Asian countries, have regimes with characteristics that tend to set dependency relations in motion. These characteristics include radical free trade, free enterprise, andforeign industrial domination. (2) Because o…

In this contribution to a debate about discrimination in the North of Ireland (British Journal of SoGiolog7r September 1981 and September 1983) further evidence is presented to support the case that there was a systematic discrimination against Catholics in the 1960s. A regression of Protestant over-representation (Y) on the log of local council size in Catholic-majority areas (X) reveals a significant positive relationship. A scatter plot shows …

From within Ireland and from without, traditional "Republicanism" (pro-United Ireland) is under fire, not only from the right but also from sections of the left. The "Marxist" Official IRA (now Sinn Fein, the Workers Party) began moving away from Republicanism in the early 1970s, causing a split and the formation of the Irish Republican Socialist Party (IRSP). At the same time, most Official IRA volunteers left it to form the Irish National Liber…
