  • From Myth-Work to Grief Work: Encountering and Re-Versioning the Folkton Drums

    Simon O’sullivan, Simon O'Sullivan•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Archaeology•2026

Is there a sense in which archaeological artefacts can be activated within the present, perhaps even to call forth different futures? This article involves a personal account – alongside archaeological analysis (and some theoretical speculation) – of an encounter with the Folkton Drums and how a kind of “re-versioning” of them in and for the present allows other affects and meanings to foreground themselves. At stake here especially is a relation…

  • A Life between the Finite and Infinite: Remarks on Deleuze, Badiou and Western Buddhism

    Open Access•Simon D O''Sullivan, Simon O'Sullivan•ARTICLE•Deleuze Studies•2014

This article explores the resonances between certain concepts of Deleuze and Badiou and a Western Buddhism that is figured, in Foucault's terminology, as a particular ‘technology of the self’. In particular Deleuze's readings of Bergson and Spinoza are brought into encounter with Buddhist doctrine and practice alongside a consideration of the figure of the bodhisattva who is further compared to Badiou's account of the subject. At stake in these e…

  • Guattari's Aesthetic Paradigm: From the Folding of the Finite/Infinite Relation to Schizoanalytic Metamodelisation

    Open Access•Simon D O''Sullivan, Simon O'Sullivan•ARTICLE•Deleuze Studies•2010

This article offers two commentaries on two of Félix Guattari's essays from Chaosmosis: ‘The New Aesthetic Paradigm’ and ‘Schizoanalytic Metamodelisation’. The first commentary attends specifically to how Guattari figures the infinite/finite relation in relation to what he calls the three Assemblages (pre-, extant, and post-capitalism) and then even more specifically to the mechanics of this relation – or folding – within the third ‘processual’ A…

  • From Stuttering and Stammering to the Diagram: Deleuze, Bacon and Contemporary Art Practice

    Open Access•Simon D O''Sullivan, Simon O'Sullivan•ARTICLE•Deleuze Studies•2009

This article attends to Deleuze and Guattari's idea of a ‘minor literature’ as well as to Deleuze's concepts of the figural, probe-heads and the diagram in relation to Bacon's paintings. The paper asks specifically what might be usefully taken from this Deleuze–Bacon encounter for the expanded field of contemporary art practice

  • From Possible Worlds to Future Folds (Following Deleuze): Richter's Abstracts, Situationist Cities, and the Baroque in Art

    Simon D O''Sullivan, Simon O'Sullivan•ARTICLE•Journal of the British Society…•2005

In this article I want to think through the notion of possible worlds as developed in Gilles Deleuze’s book on Proust and, more significantly, his book on Leibniz. In particular I want to produce an encounter between certain philosophical concepts - such as the monad and the fold - and a specific art practice, in this case the abstract paintings (or “Abstracts”) of the German contemporary artist Gerhard Richter. The art practice here is meant not…

  • Art encounters Deleuze and Guattari: Thought Beyond Representation

Simon O''Sullivan, Simon O'Sullivan•BOOK•Art encounters Deleuze and Guattari•2005

In a series of philosophical discussions and artistic case studies, this book attempts to map out an affirmative and specifically materialist attitude to modern and contemporary art. The volume begins with the mapping out of the philosophical terrain 'beyond representation', and beyond the so-called crisis of representation (deconstruction). The argument is made for a return to aesthetics - an aesthetics of affect - and for the theorisation of ar…
